“I’m a sick f***, I guess,” Hernandez told UFC.com. “Something about just breaking someone’s soul and seeing them just like, ‘F*** it.’ It f***ing gets me going. I don’t know what it is, but I just like breaking people. It’s fun to see for me.”
“I talk a lot of s*** when I fight (laughs),” Hernandez continued. “I don’t talk s*** on social media and all that, but when we’re fighting, we’re actually trying to hurt each other; that’s war tactics. Get in their head, f*** with them, break them, no matter what. You can tell in someone’s eyes.
“I’m in shape for a f*** ton of rounds, so when I see people start to get tired, I’m like, ‘Oh, b****, I’m just getting started.’ That’s another gear,” Hernandez said. “Now we’re hitting third, fourth, fifth gear. Not cruising no more. I love it.”
We’ll see if Pereira loves it on Sat. night.

185 lbs.: Anthony Hernandez vs. Michel Pereira
Anthony “Fluffy” Hernandez Record: 12-2, 1 NC | Age: 31 | Betting line: -135 Wins: 2 KO/TKO, 8 SUB, 2 DEC | Losses: 1 KO/TKO, 1 SUB, 0 DEC Height: 6’0” | Reach: 75” | Stance: Orthodox Significant Strikes Landed Per Minute: 4.30 | Striking accuracy: 59% Strikes Absorbed Per Minute: 3.46 | Striking Defense: 45% Takedown Average: 6.62 (49% accuracy) | Takedown Defense: 63% Current Ranking: No. 13 | Last fight: Submission win over Roman Kopylov
After an electric run on the regional scene, Anthony Hernandez earned his shot at a UFC contract by way of Dana White’s “Contender Series” back in June 2018, where “Fluffy” summarily destroyed opponent Jordan Wright in the first minute of the opening frame. Unfortunately, Hernandez popped for marijuana and the result was overturned, though NSAC eventually revised its outdated stance on weed and the infraction did little to hurt Hernandez’s opportunity to pursue a career in cage fighting.
That turned out to be a win for all parties involved, as “Fluffy” has been nothing short of exceptional in the six years that followed. Hernandez is the winner of five straight with four violent finishes and bagged a pair of performance bonuses along the way. During that stretch he also racked up a staggering 25 takedowns and is now just a handful of takedowns away from cracking the Top 5 all-time among wrestling leaders in the 185-pound weight class. Not bad for a competitor who is still just 31 years old and fighting in his athletic prime.
“At the end of the day, when I get in the cage, it’s, ‘F*** you, fight me, b****, it’s as simple as that,” Hernandez told UFC.com. “I’m going to be there every second, like a little f***ing fly in your face bugging you. I’m just going to show everyone that the next champ is here. That’s the goal. That’s what it’s always been. This fight just shows that I’m going to get closer and closer. So be ready, motherf***ers.”
His wrestling will certainly be put to the test against Michel Pereira, a stingy defensive wrestler with a takedown defense of 94 percent. That was primarily in the welterweight division where he was fighting smaller competition, but he’s still got a height advantage on Hernandez. “Demolidor” started as one of the most violent fighters on the roster and quickly became must-watch TV with his crazy (and often effective) array of unorthodox attacks. The Brazilian has since tempered his wild style to focus more on winning and less on dazzling the crowd and it’s hard to argue against the results: eight straight wins with three straight finishes.
“I got very prepared, I’m very ready for this to go five rounds, but I do not think this fight is going to go five rounds,” Pereira told reporters at the UFC Vegas 99 media day. “Let’s wait and see what happens, but I do not believe this fight is going five rounds. I don’t pay attention to [the betting lines] because I do think he’s coming off four or five straight wins in the division, so I understand why people would say [he’s the favorite]. It’s the merit to his credit, much respect to him. I’m accomplishing that, and I’m making my own accomplishments right now. That’s what I’m going to get to in this division as well.”
Hernandez is a notoriously slow starter but what he lacks in aggressiveness he more than makes up for in stamina, certainly a concern for Pereira. I think the goal for “Fluffy” is to let “Demolidor” empty his tank with an early blitzkrieg, then take over midway through the fight and work to submit the exhausted Brazilian. The more likely scenario is that Pereira takes advantage of a little-too-composed Hernandez and melts him with an early attack — assuming he doesn’t get himself trapped in a guillotine upon entry.
Prediction: Pereira def. Hernandez by technical knockout
135 lbs.: Rob Font vs. Kyler Phillips
Rob Font Record: 20-8 | Age: 37 | Betting line: +320 Wins: 9 KO/TKO, 4 SUB, 7 DEC | Losses: 0 KO/TKO, 1 SUB, 7 DEC Height: 5’8“ | Reach: 71” | Stance: Orthodox Significant Strikes Landed Per Minute: 5.53 | Striking accuracy: 45% Strikes Absorbed Per Minute: 3.65 | Striking Defense: 56% Takedown Average: 0.89 (35% accuracy) | Takedown Defense: 46% Current Ranking: No. 10 | Last fight: Unanimous decision loss to Deiveson Figueiredo
Kyler “The Matrix” Phillips Record: 12-2 | Age: 29 | Betting line: -430 Wins: 5 KO/TKO, 2 SUB, 5 DEC | Losses: 0 KO/TKO, 0 SUB, 2 DEC Height: 5’8“ | Reach: 72” | Stance: Orthodox Significant Strikes Landed Per Minute: 5.72 | Striking accuracy: 45% Strikes Absorbed Per Minute: 3.38 | Striking Defense: 61% Takedown Average: 2.41 (46% accuracy) | Takedown Defense: 75% Current Ranking: No. 12 | Last fight: Unanimous decision victory over Pedro Munhoz
There was a time in the not-too-distant past when Rob Font was ranked No. 4 at 135 pounds and perhaps one big performance away from a crack at the bantamweight crown. Unfortunately, Font was unable to get past former featherweight champion Jose Aldo and what followed was a compete collapse, to the tune of four losses across his next five fights. That includes his unanimous decision defeat to the resurgent Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC Austin last December and now Font is in danger of dropping out of the division Top 10 against a much-younger opponent with an impressive win streak.
“Kyler, he brings it,” Font told reporters at the UFC Vegas 99 media day. “He’s nonstop action. These type of guys, there’s more opportunities to counter, more opportunities to get finishes, and they’re not necessarily a boring fight at all. I think this is a great matchup. I think this is a ‘Fight of the Night’ for sure. Like I said, he brings it. He starts off fast. I believe I start off fast, as well. He has a wild kicking style. He’ll pull guard and try to jump on submissions.”
“This feels similar to when I fought Adrian Yanez,” Font continued. “Unfortunately I lost two in a row, then I fought him, got a big win and then lost another two in a row. Now I’m back with another unranked fighter that’s super dangerous, so it has that feeling. It just gets me up and ready to go. I know with a big win, a big finish, the headlines will be different.”
Kyler Phillips is a product of Dana White’s “Contender Series,” scoring a technical knockout victory over James Gray Jr. but he failed to earn a contract on the inaugural season of the combat sports proving ground. “The Matrix” eventually got called up for UFC Norfolk and established himself as one of the division’s future stars with a 6-1 run. That said, a positive drug test for Ostarine back in May 2023 may have cost him some shine, which he can reclaim with a dominant performance this weekend at APEX. Phillips has relied mostly on speed and athleticism thus far in his career and there’s probably little reason to do otherwise against a 37 year-old Font who looks to be on the downside of his career.
“We got a good opponent,” Phillips told reporters at the UFC Vegas 99 media day. “We got one of the names we wanted. So it’s an honor to be able to do that and step into the Octagon with such a decorated fighter. I see myself matching up very well against anybody in the division, just because of my elusiveness and able to adapt on the fly at any given moment, but still have that basis of a strong fighter.”
Phillips has been winning in recent years and Font has been losing, so it’s no surprise to see “The Matrix” as the odds-on betting favorite. That said, -430 seems ridiculously high against a veteran like Font, who has knockout power and solid fundamentals. In addition, Font has been fighting at or near the top of the food chain for years, batting ex-champions and top title contenders, and most of his losses have been close affairs. Phillips is dangerous early and Font has looked befuddled from time-to-time, but I think he weathers an early storm and settles down later in the fight, stealing a decision on the judges’ scorecards.
Prediction: Font def. Phillips by decision

Brain health amongst UFC fighters is a hot topic at the moment, and perhaps that’s for the best.
It’s rarely thought of during the actual highlight reel KO or slobber knocker “Fight of the Night,” but UFC athletes are waking up Sunday morning and feeling foggy with regularity. It’s part of the game, and damage incurred in the cage is often just the tip of the iceberg. Former interim champion Shane Carwin, for example, didn’t fight in the UFC that many times and only really gotten beaten up in one fight, but gym wars also took their toll and left Carwin in dire straits.
For whatever reason, some athletes are affected worse than others. Sometimes, there’s hope that a dominant fighter who really minimizes damage can walk away from the sport with their health intact like Demetrious Johnson. Even that’s no guarantee, however, which is why current Heavyweight kingpin, Jon Jones, was recently recorded advising his team mates to take the utmost caution with their brain health. In the process, he also described a decade of having consistent headaches, which is a worrying sign of repeat concussions.
“Throughout my whole twenties,” Jones began. “Going home with a headache all the time, concussions. Now when that happens, I get really upset and I feel like I did something wrong. Really really try to protect that brain man. After you get punched in the head enough times, your ability to see things coming goes away. I’ve been team mates with guys who you couldn’t hit, and then towards the end of their career they couldn’t stop a jab. They just couldn’t stop it. The ability for your brain to process and react quickly goes away.”
At 37 years of age, Jon Jones has never been knocked down in the cage, let alone finished. Hopefully, he adjusted his training habits early enough to avoid serious longterm consequence.
On November 16, Jones will make the walk at least one more time as the main event of UFC 309 opposite Stipe Miocic. He’s widely expected to retire afterwards, and conversations like this seem to confirm that notion even if the decision upsets some fans.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight champion Ilia Topuriavs. former Featherweight kingpin and Baddest Motherf—ker (BMF) Max Hollowayis only eight days away (Sat., Oct. 26, 2024), and the fight, which goes down at UFC 308 inside Etihad Arena on “Fight Island” in Abu Dhabi, UAE, is heating up.
For the most part, Topuria has been saying he will knock Holloway out, just like he did Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 298 this year (watch it). However, today (Thurs. Oct. 17, 2024), the champion revealed that his grappling is better than his boxing and will submit “Blessed” if the fight goes to the floor.
“Imagine, in the fight, [Holloway] starts to run around inside the octagon, and he doesn’t stop to exchange punches with me and really fight,” Topuria told Kevin Iole. “I can take the decision to take him down whenever I want. As soon as I take that decision, I will submit him. As soon as he touches the ground, he will be submitted.
“Look, I don’t want to take credit from Max Holloway because he demonstrates that he is a very good fighter with a lot of experience. But at the same time, he’s never faced anyone like me. Never ever. The moment that I take him down – if that happens, if I don’t knock him out before, I don’t think he’ll be able to stop my submissions. Trust me, I’m very, very good on the ground. I think I’m better on the ground than I am in striking. The thing is, people have never seen my ground game because I haven’t needed it,” Topuria concluded.
“El Matador” is telling the truth about his ground game. It is very good, and he was considered a grappler long before he started knocking people dead. His first seven professional fights ended via submission (six in the first round). Topuria then fell in love with boxing, and now he prefers knocking people out.
Now, will he submit Holloway?
“Blessed” has only been submitted once in his 33-fight career, and that was to Dustin Poirierin his UFC debut at UFC 143: Diaz vs. Condit in 2012.
The good thing about this dilemma is that everyone gets to find out in t-minus eight days.
The Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson boxing spectacle, which streams live on Netflix on Fri., Nov. 15, 2024 from inside AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, will be a professionally sanctioned bout under Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).
But the rules are going to look a little different on fight night.
That’s because TDLR recently rubber-stamped a pair of rule change requests from promoter Bryce Holden. The contest will now feature 14-ounce gloves — a first for “The Lone Star State” — as opposed to the standard 10 ounces.
That’s according to a new report from USA Today.
In addition, the eight rounds have been shortened from three minutes to two minutes apiece to “create more action.” While it’s not the first time a men’s contest has made that round-change request, representatives from TDLR called the decision “rare.”
“It will take the sting off a little bit,” said pro boxer Nico Ali Walsh, who is also the grandson of Muhammad Ali. “And I believe the glove size is there just as a precaution, since Mike is older than people that are fighting professionally. He shouldn’t be fighting in professionally sized gloves. The combination of the two-minute rounds and the 14-ounce gloves made this fight possible. I don’t think any sanctioning body would allow the fight to happen with Mike if they were 10-ounce gloves and three-minute rounds.”
Hollywood leading lady Sydney Sweeney returns to the big screen to play former WBC super welterweight champion and boxing hall of famer Christy Martin in a new biopic from Black Bear Pictures, directed by David Michod.
To help prepare for the role, Sweeney underwent rigorous physical training to transform her body to look more like a professional athlete. Some of her recent Instagram photos reflect those changes, leaving her nearly unrecognizable.
“Well the cat’s out of the bag thanks to some [paparazzi] in the bushes so here’s a little BTS from my film I’m working on right now,” Sweeney wrote. “Over the past few months, I’ve been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman — a true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring. Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength, and hope, and I’m honored to step into her shoes to share her powerful story with you all. More to come soon.”
Fighter biopics are all the rage these days.
In addition to her trailblazing run throughout the 1990s, Martin had a tumultuous personal life, surviving a murder attempt by her then-husband in 2010. “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” now 56, finished with a professional record of 49-7-3 with 32 knockouts.
The untitled project does not yet have a release date.

After a quiet few years, Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) star Mike Perry has once again found himself in some legal hot water. The former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight slugger was arrested and charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI) last weekend in Lake County, Florida. He refused to take a field sobriety test and also popped for refusing to sign a citation.
To make matters worse, video of Perry’s arrest has released, and it’s not great. A very agitated Perry does not respond positively to being cuffed, dropping slurs and accusing the officers of arresting him because “They know exactly who I am.” Fortunately for everyone involved, it wasn’t violent, but it was an ugly scene.
Consequently, Perry has released an official statement apologizing for disrespecting the officers involved in his arrest. It reads, “I am writing this to express my deepest apologies for the inappropriate and disrespectful language I used towards members of the Clermont police department. I understand that my words were hurtful and offensive, and I sincerely regret my actions. I recognize the important and often difficult work that law enforcement officers do to keep our community safe, and I truly respect the dedication and sacrifice that comes with the job. My behavior was inexcusable, and I take full responsibility for my actions. Please know that this incident does not reflect how I truly feel about the [Police Department/Officers], and I will make every effort to ensure this type of behavior never happens again. I hope you can accept my apology as sincere, and I will be more mindful and respectful in the future. Thank you for your time and consideration.”

If that doesn’t read like a real “Platinum” quote, that’s because it’s almost certainly not. Immediately, Perry was accused by many online of using ChatGPT or a similar artificial intelligence to generate the apology. Talk about low effort …
At any rate, Perry’s last appearance in combat sports was a July beating at the hands of Jake Paul. Perry has no bout scheduled, but he’s expected to return to BKFC for his next match, as he currently holds a 5-0 record sans gloves.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is going “down under.”
Today (Wed., Oct. 16, 2024), UFC announced that they are headed to Sydney, Australia, for its second pay-per-view (PPV) of the new year, UFC 312 on Feb. 8, 2025 (Feb. 9 in Australia), and the action will go down inside Qudos Bank Arena.

UFC has held a PPV in Australia for the past two years and will continue doing so this next year.
No fights have been announced for UFC 312, but we can expect a slew of Australians to fill the card, such as Jack Della Maddalena, Robert Whittaker, and Cody Haddon, who is a new addition.
The last time the promotion was in Sydney, Australia, was for UFC 293 on Sept. 10, 2023, and utter madness happened that night as Sean Strickland shocked the mixed martial arts (MMA) world by upsetting Israel Adesanya for the Middleweight championship via unanimous decision (watch highlights). The co-main event, Alexander Volkov, submitted Tai Tuivasa in the second round with the rare Ezekiel choke.
Will Strickland return to Sydney for his rematch with Dricus Du Plessis? He hopes not.
