Undefeated welterweight Ian Machado Garry was hoping to face former three-time title challenger Colby Covington in the UFC 303 co-main event on June 29, but Covington will not be ready to fight until this fall.  With Covington off the table, Garry has shifted gears.

According to Garry, he’s verbally agreed to fight Michael “Venom” Page but isn’t sure if Page will have enough time to cut the weight.

“Colby is officially out,” Garry said to talkSPORT MMA. “He sustained an injury in December and he medically won’t be cleared until September. I don’t believe a f**king second of it. I think he’s running. I don’t think he wants anything to do with me, and he’s running. But, that’s where I’m at.”

Garry has been offered other opponents but nothing has been finalized.  Garry believes they’re all ‘running’ from him.

“There’s been other people that have been offered, and they’re running, too,” he said. “They’re all coming up with excuses. At the end of the day, whoever wants to show up across for me in that Octagon on June 29th.

“I’m sick of this ranking stuff.  I’m in a position where everyone above me is injured and then Leon [Edwards] and Belal [Muhammad] are facing off against each other,” Garry continued. “I have no interest in fighting below me, but I’m kind of in a position where I have no choice other than to wait. And last thing I want do is wait. I want to be active. I want fight. I want to compete.  That’s what I love to do, so anyone that is willing to stand in that octagon across from me June 29th and get their ass kicked, that’s who I want.”

“I’ve said, ‘Yes,;” to Michael “Venom” Page. “I’ve said ‘yes’ to that name. Him and his coaches are deciding because he feels a bit heavy. He’s a bit heavy to make to make weight in seven weeks’ time, but I’ve said ‘yes.’”

“They’ve offered me Colby. I’ve said ‘yes’ to ‘MVP.’ I’ve said ‘yes’ to Sean Brady. I’ve said ‘yes’ to I don’t even know his name, the Uzbekistani guy, if he had won. I’ve said ‘yes’ to Joaquin [Buckley].  I’ve said yes to every single person that’s come my way.”

Tyson Fury meets Oleksandr Usyk this weekend in what is being considered one of the most highly-anticipated boxing matches in recent history. Despite the fight being just days away, John Fury has managed to steal the headlines once again.

John Fury has a knack for stealing the spotlight, whether that’s with his witty comments or bizarre outbursts. He is no stranger to controversial moments but his recent escapade may land him in deep water.

A video has surfaced showing John Fury viciously headbutting an alleged member of Oleksandr Usyk’s team. The headbutt ultimately caused a cut to open up on Fury’s head.

John Fury has given his immediate views on the brawl. According to the man himself, his actions were strictly in support of his son.

“Well, you know, it’s the fight game. Emotions are running high,” Fury insisted following the altercation. “At the end of the day, I was sat there minding my own business and all I could hear was, ‘Usyk, Usyk, Usyk.’ And I’m going to stand up for my own son.”

“At the end of the day, he’s my son. He’s the best in the world and I want people to respect him and give him the credit he deserves as the champion.”

“He’s the best in the world and when people start saying this and saying that, because when I was in amongst them, all I could hear was badness.”

“At the end of the day, some little idiot came forward–I knew who he was–in my space. He got what he got and that’s the end of it. [It] happens every other week for me that.”

Continuing, John Fury then stated that only Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk have the right to talk trash.

“Tyson and Usyk can say what they want to each other, they’re the ones that are going to fight. But I don’t think anybody else has got the authority to call anybody else.”

“If one of my team was to insult Usyk, they’d be sacked because they haven’t got the authority to do that… At the end of the day, I’ve done what I’ve done. I’ve [got] no complaints about anything. I am what I am. I’m going to defend my name with everything I’ve got.”

When former featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski and lightweight titleholder Islam Makhachev first fought at UFC 284 in February 2023, the fight went the distance and was close contested.  The rematch at UFC 294 didn’t go a full round.

Makhachev was expected to face former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira in the UFC 294 main event, but Oliveira was forced out of the fight after suffering a nasty cut in training.  Volkanovski stepped in on eleven-days notice.  It was the first time that champions in different divisions rematched for the same title.  Relive Makhachev’s first-round finish over Volkanovski.

Derrick Lewis UFC St. Louis Octagon Interview

by Site Admin ~ May 12th, 2024

Heavyweight knockout artist Derrick Lewis scored another finish on Saturday in the UFC St. Louis main event.  Lewis knocked out Rodrigo Nascimento early in the third round after knocking him down with a right hand.

Lewis entered the bout coming off a decision loss to Jailton Almeida in his previous fight back in November. He had lost four of his last five bouts and was in desperate need of a win to stay relevant in the division.  “The Black Beast” halted Nascimento’s three-fight winning streak and added to his record knockout wins in UFC history.  The record is now 15.

After the win, Lewis took off his fight shorts, took out his cup, removed his gloves and spoke to former middleweight champion-turned commentator Michael Bisping.

There has been a buzz surrounding Conor McGregor’s return to the octagon since it was revealed and that is evident with the insane record that’s was recently broken.

‘The Notorious’ has made a habit of taking prolonged absences from competing, though a gut-wrenching leg break has been the cause of his almost three-year hiatus this time around. As he aims to put his injury behind him, the Irishman plans to feature once more this year, targeting the highly-anticipated UFC 306 at the Las Vegas Sphere.

As stated by Dana White, the intrigue around the Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler super-fight has reached new heights. According to the UFC CEO, UFC 303 has surpassed a $ 20million gate over a month in advance, making it the highest gate in the company’s history.

“It’s already way over $ 20million,” White said regarding the UFC 303 gate during the UFC St. Louis post-fight press conference.

The previous highest gate in UFC history was the historic night at Madison Square Garden. On that night, Conor McGregor became the first simultaneous two-division UFC champion, beating Eddie Alvarez with a masterful display.

McGregor will be hoping to deliver a similar performance when he faces the tough and ready Michael Chandler at the record-setting UFC 303 later this year.

Eleventh-ranked welterweight Joaquin Buckley extended his winning streak to four consecutive fights on Saturday in the UFC St. Louis co-main event.  Buckley picked up a one-sided unanimous decision win over Nursulton Ruziboev and cut quite a promo in his post-fight interview.

Buckley called out former two-division champion Conor McGregor following his win on Saturday, but the two will never stand across the octagon from each other.

“Who do I want next, huh?  He’s got a fight already booked up, but it’s a massive name.  There’s only one name you should call out if you’re on this mic, a powerful name.  That name is Conor McGregor,” Buckley said in his post-fight interview.

“You’re fighting at 170, but you ain’t fighting a welterweight.  You’re fighting a lightweight.  You’re fighting a lightweight midget.  Come at me, bro.  Come at me,” Buckley continued.  “You said you built your weight up but you’re bullying Sean O’Malley and Ryan Garcia.  Come and bully me, dog.  Come and bully me and let’s see what you’re really about.”

McGregor is set to make his octagon return on June 29 in the UFC 303 main event against lightweight contender Michael Chandler.  It will be the first time McGregor has fought since suffering a broken leg in his UFC 264 loss to Dustin Poirier in July 2021.

Buckley’s call out may have been entertaining, but UFC CEO Dana White isn’t entertaining the idea of it ever happening.  When asked during the post-fight press conference if there was any chance of the two fighting, White replied, ‘No.’

St. Louis hosted Saturday’s UFC event at the Enterprise Center.  A heavyweight clash between two-time title challenger Derrick Lewis and fifteenth-ranked Rodrigo Nascimento headlined the fight card.

Lewis entered the bout coming off a decision loss to Jailton Almeida in his last fight back in November.  Lewis had lost four of his last five bouts and was in desperate need of a win to stay relevant in the division.  Nascimento entered the fight riding a three-fight winning streak and eight years younger than 39-year-old Lewis.

Lewis, how holds the record for the most knockouts in UFC history, came out aggressive.  He attempted a flying knee to start the fight and clinched.  He tripped Nascimento to the canvas but Nascimento quickly got to his feet.  The two remained in the clinch along the cage.  Nascimento delivered knees to the body and turned Lewis.  They separated and Lewis missed with a head kick.  He landed a right hand.  They clinched and Lewis connected with right hands.  Nascimento took Lewis down with two minutes remaining in the round.

Nascimento worked in Lewis’ half guard.  He delivered short right hands before going to the body with lefts.  Nascimento mounted Lewis and Lewis escaped and gained top position.  The round ended with Lewis on top and Nascimento holding on.

Nascimento opened the second round with a leg kick.  Lewis looked to counter with a right hand but it was mostly blocked.  They exchanged right hands and Lewis powered forward punching his way into the clinch.  They reversed position along the cage a few times before Lewis tried to toss Nascimento causing a separation.  Nascimento returned to the clinch.  Lewis separated and unloaded right hands.  Nascimento covered and clinched.

Lewis connected with a right hand with two minutes left on the clock.  He landed a big elbow on the inside.  Lewis loaded up with right hands.  Lewis looked to have tripped and Nascimento quickly took his back with 90 seconds remaining.  Lewis controlled an arm and Nascimento spun and ended in half guard.  He delivered a heavy elbow.  The close round ended with Nascimento on top.

The pace slowed at the start of the third round.  Lewis delivered a knee to the body.  Nascimento landed a right hand as Lewis moved into the pocket.  Lewis fired back and staggered Nascimento with a right hand knocking him down.  The referee stepped in after a couple of more shots.  The official time of the finish was 0:49 of the third round.

After the win, Lewis took off his fight shorts and took out his cup.  With the knockout win, Lewis added to his UFC record knockout victories.  15 times he’s left his opponent separated from consciousness.
