UFC 300: Justin Gaethje vs. Max Holloway Highlights

by Site Admin ~ April 15th, 2024

Former featherweight champion Max Holloway became a viral sensation following his UFC 300 knockout win over Justin Gaethje.  The symbolic ‘BMF’ belt was on the line and the fight ended in one of the greatest knockouts in UFC history.

Up on the scorecards and in the final seconds of the fight, Holloway pointed to the center of the octagon for he and Gaethje to slug it out.  Gaethje obliged and with one second remaining in the fight found himself face-first on the canvas.

Take a look back at the stunning moment.

Light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira arrived in the UFC in November 2021.  In his fourth fight, the Brazilian was fighting former kickboxing foe Israel Adesanya for the 185-pound championship.  He stopped Adesanya late in the final round to capture the title.

Adesanya got revenge in the rematch and Pereira set his sights on the 205-pound weight class.  In his seventh octagon appearance, Pereira won the light heavyweight title by stopping former champion Jiri Prochazka in the second round at UFC 295.  At UFC 300 on Saturday, Pereira knocked out former titleholder Jamahal Hill in the first round.  After the win, Pereira indicated that he’d like to move up to the heavyweight division for at least one fight.  It would be the third weight class he’s fought in since his UFC arrival.

“I want to continue defending this belt.  I talked a lot about fighting in Brazil if I won this fight.  I’m not hurt.  Nothing happened.  I know there needs to be a lot of promotion behind a fight but I want to have a fight at heavyweight,” Pereira said following his UFC 300 knockout win.

UFC CEO Dana White was not sold on Pereira’s desire to compete in the heavyweight division.  He didn’t completely shut the idea down, but made it clear that he believes Pereira should stay in the light heavyweight division.

“When you think about him moving up to heavyweight, you’ve got [Jon] Jones.  You’ve got [Tom] Aspinall.  The list goes on and in in that heavyweight division,” White said during the UFC 300 Post-Fight Press Conference.

“The heavyweight division is nasty.  I don’t know if that’s the right move for him,” White continued.  “He looked damn good in the division he’s in.  I think you might want to stick around there for a minute.  But I don’t know.  These are all things we’ll talk about for the next 15 Tuesdays, so we’ll get it forged out.”

Former women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm put up little resistance to Kayla Harrison’s dominance at UFC 300 on Saturday.

Harrison, a two-time Olympic Gold medalist, made her promotional debut on the historic fight card at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.  Holm was ranked fifth at the time and Harrison thoroughly dominated her.  The fight ended in the second round when Holm was forced to tap out to a rear-naked choke.

Holm released a video statement following the one-sided defeat on social media.  “A little broken hearted but never broken. These are the moments we dream of etching in our legacy, a dream I failed to reach. Thank you all for the love,” Holm wrote accompanying the video.

“Well, none of that went how I envisioned over the last ten weeks of this training camp,” Holm said in the video.  “I have no excuses.  I had all the best coaching, the best teammates, the best sparring, all the help that I could have even dreamed of asking for and I went out there and I lost all focus on the game plan.  I did nothing that we trained for in this fight.

“And all the respect to Kayla.  She was the better fighter that night.  I just know that I’m capable of more than that, and I’m one of those that like to self reflect rather than run from things.  I think honesty with yourself can be sometimes the hardest thing, but I’m healthy.  My heart hurts.  My ego hurts.  But I just want to say thank you to all the fans who have always stood by my side and of course my team, coaches, family, and my friends.  Much love to everybody.  I appreciate you, and I’ll be back.”

UFC CEO Dana White wasn’t so sure that he wants to see Holm back in the octagon during the UFC 300 Post-Fight Press Conference.  “I would love to see Holly retire,” said White.

The 42-year-old Holm has basically lost three of her last four fights.  Her submission loss to Mayra Bueno Silva was later ruled a no contest after Bueno Silva tested positive to a banned substance, so she’s technically 1-2, 1 NC in her last four bouts.

The return of former two-division champion Conor McGregor has a date and location.

UFC CEO Dana White announced that McGregor will headline the June 29th UFC 303 pay-per-view event against Michael Chandler.  The event takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Chandler (23-8) has been sitting on the sidelines waiting for McGregor to be ready to step back inside the octagon.  Having last fought in November 2022, Chandler and McGregor coached opposite one another on The Ultimate Fighter 31 last summer.

McGregor (22-6) last fought in July 2021 in a trilogy bout against Dustin Poirier.  McGregor suffered a broken leg in the final seconds of the opening round.  Sidelined with recovery and acting obligations, McGregor’s return has been long awaited.

“June 29th, Conor versus Chandler,” White said during the UFC 300 Post-Fight Press Conference.  The fight will take place at 170 pounds.

There have been four other bouts announced for the June 29th Las Vegas pay-per-view event.  The fight card also features a women’s strawweight bout between 14th-ranked Michelle Waterson-Gomez and 15th-ranked Gillian Robertson.  A featherweight bout between Andre Fili and Cub Swanson also takes place on the fight card.  A flyweight bout between promotional newcomer Rei Tsuruya and Carlos Hernande has also been announced.

UFC 302 on June 1st at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. didn’t have an announced main event or co-main event until Saturday.

UFC CEO Dana White announced during the UFC 300 Post-Fight Press Conference that the lightweight title will be on the line in the UFC 302 main event.  Champion Islam Makhachev faces Dustin Poirier.  In the co-main event, former middleweight champion Sean Strickland takes on former title challenger Paulo Costa.

“June 1st, Newark, New Jersey pay-per-view, the main event Islam vs. Poirier,” White said.  “Co-main event, five rounds, Strickland versus Costa.”

Makhachev (25-1) knocked out former featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski in his last fight.  Both of his title defenses have been against Volkanovski.  Poirier (30-8, 1 NC) ended Benoit Saint Denis’ five-fight winning streak in his last outing, winning by knockout.

Strickland (28-6) lost the 185-pound championship to Dricus Du Plessis via split decision at UFC 297 in January.  He’s lobbied for an immediate rematch but after meeting with the fight promotion agreed to face Costa next.

Costa (14-3) is coming off a unanimous decision loss to former titleholder Robert Whittaker in his last fight.  Having lost three of his last four matches, Costa is in desperate need of a win.
