Former middleweight champion Chris Weidman is in the twilight of his career and looking past his time inside the cage.  The 39-year old wouldn’t mind facing UFC Hall of Famer Anderson Silva for a third time except in the boxing ring.

The landscape of combat sports is very different than when Weidman entered the sport in 2009.  As former two-division champion Daniel Cormier put it, “There’s boxing.  There’s celebrity boxing.  There’s YouTube boxing.  If I was younger, and I was in the tail end of my career, I don’t know that I wouldn’t go down that path,” Cormier said on his YouTube channel.

Weidman fights this weekend at UFC on ESPN 54 in Atlantic City against Bruno Silva.  If he wins, he’ll likely get a little more mileage out of his UFC career.  If he loses, boxing may be on the horizon.

“I love the UFC.  I think I have two fights left on my deal.  We’ll see.  A big win over Bruno Silva this weekend, because of everything I’ve accomplished, it could allot me some big opportunities inside the UFC,” Weidman said.

“I love the UFC, but obviously there’s boxing matches out there that’ll make a lot of money.  I wouldn’t mind ending my career with that,” Weidman continued.  “Who wouldn’t want to see Anderson Silva versus Chris Weidman boxing match?  Can he get some revenge on me?  There’s some cool fights out there.”

Former UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen had a teammate that once took winning at all costs to an insanely extreme level.

With a UFC Vegas 89 flyweight bout ending in a disqualification after Igor Severino bit Andre Lima last week, biting was fresh on Sonnen’s mind.  During his reaction to Severino’s actions, Sonnen told a story about a teammate that once bit himself in a wrestling match and blamed it on his opponent.

“I have seen a lot of teeth marks in the sport of wrestling.  You also can not bite somebody in wrestling.  As a matter of fact, if you claim a guy bit you, including if the referee doesn’t see it, if there are bit marks the referee will disqualify that guy right away.  It has become a little bit of a problem because a bite when I say it, and I think when your ears hear it, is defined specifically to somebody who intended to bite you,” Sonnen said on his YouTube channel.

“In wrestling it’s not always that case.  We have something called cross-face in wrestling.  We have a number of things in wrestling where you would bring your arm, it would go right across the guy’s face, which means you would be taking your arm into the guy’s mouth,” Sonnen continued.  “And if you continue to push and his teeth are exposed it’s going to show you those bite marks even if he never meant to do it and more importantly doesn’t clamp down.  This got tested in wrestling a number of times where a kid would get up and say, ‘he bit me.’  You’d see the mark.  There’d be blood.  The referee who didn’t even see it would stop the match and disqualify the kid.”

Knowing the rules and that you’re disqualified for biting, someone could take advantage of the situation.  Sonnen had a teammate do just that.

“I had a guy.  My own teammate got put in a precarious position and bit himself, jumped up to his feet and tells the ref, ‘He bit me.’  The ref says, ‘what?’  He shows him the marks, which is what rule says you have to do, and the referee instantly disqualified the other guy,” Sonnen explained.  “My buddy bit himself, told the referee that it was the other guy, showed him the marks, which is what the rule book says.”

Sonnen didn’t reveal the identity of his teammate.

The UFC is going to Saudi Arabia.  For the first time the fight promotion will host an event at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh.  The event will be a ‘Fight Night’ card and is headlined by a middleweight bout between former champion Robert Whittaker and Khamzat Chimaev.

UFC CEO Dana White made the announcement on Wednesday via social media.  “BOOOOOOM!!!!!! UFC is heading to Saudi Arabia for the first time with a BAD ASS card, headlined by @robwhittakermma vs @khamzat_chimaev,” White wrote on a video post.

“What’s up guys?  Here with another announcement.  On Saturday, June 22, we’ll be going to Saudi Arabia,” White said in the video.  “Our fight fight in the Kingdom will be a Fight Night that will air live and free on ABC.  The main event will be former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker versus 13-0, undefeated Khamzat Chimaev to see who will be the No. 1 contender for the UFC Middleweight championship.”

White also announced the fight card’s co-main event as well as several other bouts.

“The co-main event, the No. 3 ranked knockout artist Sergei Pavlovich versus the No. 6 ranked Alexander Volkov.  Also, Kelvin Gastelum will be taking on Daniel Rodriguez.  We’ve got Johnny Walker versus Volkan Oezdemir,” White added.

Nearing the end of his career, former middleweight champion Chris Weidman faces Bruno Silva on this weekend’s UFC fight card in Atlantic City.

Weidman won the 185-pound title be dethroning UFC Hall of Famer Anderson Silva at UFC 162 in July 2013.  He successfully defended the title three times before losing to Luke Rockhold in December 2015.  Since losing the belt, Weidman has struggled.

Those struggles were precipitated when he suffered a broken leg in his UFC 261 bout against Uriah Hall in April 2021.  Ironically, Weidman suffered the same injury that Silva did in their rematch at UFC 168.

Heading into the fight with Hall, Weidman had lost five of his seven previous bouts.  His recovery was marred with setbacks and he wouldn’t return to the octagon for over two years.  In his return bout at UFC 292 in August 2023, Weidman was defeated by Brad Tavares.

Having lost seven of his last nine fights and unable to put together back-to-back wins in the last nine years, Weidman’s fight with Bruno Silva could be the last for the 39-year old.

“I’m undefeated in Atlantic City.  That’s where I started my career.  When I got the call, to be honest, I was like, oh man, that would be a really cool place to hang up the gloves,” Weidman said during an appearance on The MMA Hour.

“As I started training, I was like, let me see how my body feels.  If I feel like I’m done I’ll be done, you know, 30 surgeries in and stuff.  But I’ve been feeling amazing,” Weidman continued.  “I am very cognizant that Atlantic City would be a cool place to hang up the gloves but I don’t see that happening, just to speak to the elephant in the room.  I feel great right now and I’m ready for Atlantic City.”

Weidman not only feels great, he’s in a good place mentally.  His coaches believe that he could still be one of the best middleweights in the world.

“I think because physically I feel so good, mentally I feel really good.  I’m excited to go out there.  I feel great in training,” Weidman said.  “Listen, I know what it sounds like and I get it, but the coaches think if I wanted to, if I have the energy to do it, I could be the best in the world again.  And I do feel that way.  Now, I’ve got to go put in the work.  I’ve got to actually show that in the UFC, so we’ll see on Saturday night how I look but the way I feel is amazing.”

Silva will enter the octagon at Boardwalk Hall this Saturday coming off back-to-back losses.  He’s 1-4 in his last five fights.

When asked about the greatest of all time, UFC CEO Dana White didn’t hesitate to answer.  He said, ‘Jon Jones.’  In an interview with Lex Fridman, White discussed what made Jones the UFC GOAT, and why there’s no doubt about it.

“He’s never been beat.  He destroyed everybody at light heavyweight which at the time was the toughest weight class in the company, in the sport.  Then he moved up to heavyweight.  He won easily at heavyweight,” White said.  “There’s no debate.  Nobody can debate who’s the greatest of all time.  It’s absolutely, positively Jon Jones.  He’s never lost.  He’s never been beat in the octagon.”

Jones became the youngest UFC champion at the age of 23.  He defeated Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 128 in March 2011 to win the 205-pound championship at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.  All of his fights after that have been championship bouts.

Jones was stripped of the title three separate times during his light heavyweight dominance.  The first time was in 2015 after defeating Daniel Cormier at UFC 182.  Jones was forced to vacate the championship after violating the UFC Athlete Conduct Policy for being involved in a hit and run incident that caused injury.

Jones won the interim light heavyweight title in his return fight against Ovince Saint Preux but was stripped of that belt after testing positive to banned substances.  Fifteen months later he was facing Cormier in a rematch at UFC 214.  Jones knocked Cormier out to win back the title but the result was later changed to a no contest when Jones again tested positive for a banned substance.

Jones won the belt in his first fight back from suspension and defended it three more times before vacating the division.  Overall, Jones successfully defended the light heavyweight title eleven times.

Jones took a three-year hiatus from fighting from 2020 to 2023.  He returned as a heavyweight and won the championship in his heavyweight debut.  Jones made quick work of Ciryl Gane at UFC 285 in March 2023 to capture his second divisional title.  He’s slated to take on former two-time champion Stipe Miocic later this year.

White said that Jones had ‘never been beaten’ and ‘he never lost,’ but that’s exactly true.  Jones was disqualified for illegal elbows in a fight against Matt Hamill in 2009.  Jones was likely seconds away from a finish and was winning, but rules are rules.  It’s true that Jones hasn’t been beaten by another fighter.  His loss was essentially to himself, but it’s still a loss.

Whether you consider Jones unbeaten or not doesn’t really matter.  There are other variables to consider and White believes longevity is one of them.

“The other thing that you have to factor in too is longevity,” said White.  “Sometimes, with a lot of these guys, the sport passes them by.  Younger guys that are faster, this, that, and the sport evolves.  Nobody’s been able to beat Jon Jones.

“The other thing that you measure, when you said dominance, it’s true.  If you’re this guy that has unbelievable power and you’re just f**king knocking everybody out and nobody’s ever pulled you into the deep water before.  That was when my opinion of Jon Jones started to change,” White continued.

“[Alexander] Gustafsson took him into the deep water.  Gustafsson hit him with some sh*t that he had never been hit with.  Gustafsson tested him and put Jon Jones in a place where I bet if you sat down and interviewed Jon Jones, going into the deep rounds of that Jon Jones thought he was going to die.  And he kept going.  He was willing to do whatever it took to win that fight… It’s undeniable.  You can hate all you want.  Jon Jones is the greatest of all time.”

Do you agree with White?

Charles Oliveira won the lightweight championship by stopping Michael Chandler early in the second round of their UFC 262 bout in 2021.

Oliveira entered the fight riding an eight-fight winning streak.  He’d of course go on to win the lightweight championship before losing it to current titleholder Islam Makhachev.

It was Chandler’s second fight inside the octagon.  In his debut, he won a bonus for stopping Dan Hooker in the first round.  The performance was later deemed ‘Debut of the Year’ for 2021.

Oliveira (34-9, 1 NC) is ranked as the top contender in the 155-pound division.  He takes on fourth-ranked Arman Tsarukyan (21-3) at UFC 300 on April 13 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Chandler (23-8) is expected to face former two-division champion Conor McGregor this summer.

UFC 300 features four of the Top 5 light heavyweights in the world.

In the main event, champion Alex Pereira takes on former titleholder to top contender Jamahal Hill.  In the featured preliminary card bout, former champion and second-ranked contender Jiri Prochazka takes on fifth-ranked Aleksandar Rakić.

The winner of the Prochazka versus Rakic bout will be watching the main event intently with the winner putting themselves in line for the next title shot.  Prochazka believes Hill has more weapons than Pereira.

“More weapons in the fight I feel are on Jamahal Hill’s side,” Prochazka told Inside Fighting.  “Jamahal Hill has a better, I think he will will have the better chances on the start of the fight and when the fight will continue there are more chances for Pereira.”

With a win over Rakic, Prochazka believes that he’ll be next in line to fight for the title he once held.

“I believe in that and I will do everything for that because after the last fight, after that decision, I believe that I can be the champion and I will,” Prochazka said.

Prochazka lost to Pereira via TKO in his last fight at UFC 295 in November.  Hoping for a rematch, Prochaza believes he also matches up well with ‘super ordinary’ Hill if he were to win.

“I think it (my style) will work because there is a lot of space to target the shots.  His style is, I think from all the fighters in the UFC, is super ordinary but very effective,” Prochazka said.  “That will be something that I’d like to fight.”

In the second bout on the UFC Vegas 89 fight card last weekend, flyweight Igor Severino was disqualified after biting Andre Lima in the second round.  Severino was released by the fight promotion and faces possible disciplinary action from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Former middleweight champion Michael Bisping reacted to the incident and called Severino’s actions ‘disgusting.’

“That is insane,” Bisping said on the Believe You Me podcast.  “He’s a skilled mixed martial artist.  He was looking good.  Apparently, he was undefeated.  They both were.  I don’t know much about where he’s from in Brazil, but I’m assuming that it’s a tough part of town.”

“You’ve got to be a certain type of person to resort to biting someone.  He wasn’t even getting his ass kicked.  He wasn’t even getting choked out,” Bisping continued.  “If you think of gentlemanly conduct, like fair game in the boxing, in the jiu-jitsu world.  They’ll fight with their fists and when someone hits the floor you don’t follow them down.”

“Who in their right minds, even on the streets in a street fight, unless you’re going to get murdered and then you do what you can.  Unless the guy comes to your house and is really trying to do something bad then whatever you can find.

“If you’re getting into a one on one fight and you resort to biting the guy.  I’m sorry.  That’s disgusting.  Utterly disgusting,” Bisping said.  ”

With the disqualification,  Severino suffered his first career loss, but he lost more than just a fight.  He lost respect; respect for his opponent, the rules, and the sport.
