UFC Fight Night: Price v Vick

Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight!

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

UFC veteran James Vick (13-6) has taken a lot of damage in the latter stage of his career.

Vick began his UFC career with a lot of success. An Ultimate Fighter (TUF) veteran, the Texan won nine of his first ten bouts inside the Octagon to advance up the Lightweight ladder. He actually entered his main event bout versus Justin Gaethje as the favorite, but that’s about where it all fell apart for “The Texecutioner.”

Starting with Gaethje, Vick would lose four straight, including three defeats by knockout. Another knockout loss on the regional scene sent him to the Karate Combat promotion, where the 37 year old has fought three times. In his most recent bout for Karate Combat, Vick was knocked cold by flashy UFC veteran Rafael Alves via jumping switch kick.

It was a nasty knockout that went viral over summer, but the seriousness hasn’t been discussed until now. In a recent episode of the Jaxxon podcast, Karate Combat President Asim Zaidi spoke about how scary the knockout was and how Vick was put into a medically induced coma in the aftermath.

Discussing the knockout, Zaidi explained, “I was there live, and it was such a successful event. [the knockout] ruined my whole mood. I just couldn’t be happy after that. [He was unconscious] for a couple of days. They put him in a self-induced coma. And he had a respiratory [machine] to make sure he stays breathing.

“I went to him when he woke up, and he’s like, ‘What did he catch me with?’ Switch kick, and he’s like ‘Oh man, I want to get back in there’ … Thank God he’s okay man. But, I can’t morally want to do that. I’m not gonna put him back in there.”

Vick retired from MMA after a 2021 regional loss that saw him break his orbital. Hopefully, he takes the hint from Zaidi and stops competing in combat sports, because the aftermath sounds like one of the scariest high-profile knockouts in recent years.

Insomnia

Canelo fans getting weird.

The idea of Kevin Lee fighting and losing to some mediocre unknown with a 9-3 record on Contenders Series depresses me greatly.

One Championship will do anything EXCEPT book MMA fights.

Speaking of One, LinkedIn posting is the absolute worst kind.

Who should Colby Covington face in his alleged November return to action?

I have a really hard time seeing Charles Jourdain having success at 135-pounds, and Victor Henry seems like a difficult match up to start with … so maybe the Canadian proves me wrong on two accounts!

Song Yadong vs. Henry Cejudo sounds like an obvious banger booking IF “Triple C” stays at Bantamweight.

Slips, rips, and KO clips

For whatever reason, referee didn’t want to stop this one.

Every right hand thrown in this clip was crisp and right down the middle.

Left hook is king in pocket exchanges.

Random Land

I’m a fan of covering up your tattoo mistakes with a grim reaper or jaguar as the lord intended, but … this guy gets a pass.

Mexico v New Zealand - International Friendly
Canelo Alvarez | Photo by Omar Vega/Getty Images

Canelo Alvarez expects to make light work of Conor McGregor if the two were ever to meet in the boxing ring.

The super middleweight champion defends his WBA, WBC, and WBO titles against Edgar Berlanga this Saturday, but that hasn’t stopped reporters from asking him what he has lined up for his next fight. Boxing reporter Manouk Akopyan asked Alvarez if he’d ever be interested in fighting UFC star Conor McGregor, which Alvarez found amusing.

“I know, and then we show boxing is better,” Alvarez said, before adding, “Easy, easy, way easy money.”

McGregor, who previously held UFC titles at 145 and 155 pounds, has participated in only one pro boxing bout, a high-profile contest that saw him go nine rounds with the legendary Floyd Mayweather before succumbing to strikes in the 10th. Since that August 2017 event, McGregor has competed sporadically in MMA, winning just one of his past four fights and he still awaits his next booking after an injury forced him out of a fight with Michael Chandler at UFC 303.

Asked how long McGregor would last against him, Alvarez predicted that he could beat McGregor by knockout whenever he decided to do so.

“At the time I want,” Alvarez said. “One round, two rounds, three rounds, whatever I want.”

Though it’s unlikely that Alvarez and McGregor ever square off under any combat sports rule set, the boxing superstar is going head-to-head with the UFC itself this weekend when he takes on Berlanga at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, not far from Sphere, which hosts UFC 306 the same night.

UFC CEO Dana White has made it clear that he won’t shy away from scheduling annual UFC events for Mexican Independence Day weekend in the future, a decision that Alvarez has no problem with.

“No, it’s nothing,” Alvarez said. “Competition is good. May and September are my days and competition is good. I don’t do it in that way, I just focus on my team and focus on what I’m doing, and if somebody wants to do other shows, it’s fine.”

When Brian Ortega was first announced to be taking on Diego Lopes in the co-main event of UFC 303, fans circled that one out as a fight that you can’t afford to miss.

The two featherweight contenders have got two of the most exciting styles in the division and neither man is known for backing down from a scrap.

Unfortunately, Ortega was forced to pull out of the fight due to illness but after Lopes defeated Dan Ige on that night, the pair were rescheduled for UFC 306.

It’s a big fight for the former two-time title challenger to once again put himself in the mix at the top of the 145-pound weight class.

However, if you think that that’s going to make Ortega switch up his approach, you’re sorely mistaken.

Brian Ortega Says He’s Going To Go To War With Like-Minded Individual At UFC 306

In a recent interview with Submission Radio, Ortega told the fans what they can expect to see from his fight at the Sphere this weekend.

Rather than using his experience against the surging Lopes or looking to fight a bit more reserved, he’s excited to compete against another man that is always willing to wade into the fire to come away with the victory.

“It’s like I told everybody, I said that you have someone who refuses to lose on the feet and refuses to lose in the stand-up so when I say that, I bet you have no idea who I’m talking about. That’s why this is an exciting fight, you get to fight almost like a version of yourself. Tad bit different styles, same mentality.”

Ortega closed things out with one final message, promising that the judges aren’t going to be needed for this fight but he won’t be the one that requires any assistance.

“Someone is going to get finished, guaranteed. You know me, you’ve seen me. I either put you on your shield or you put me on mine. I’m not going out on my shield.”
