The main event of UFC 307 is sure to be an exciting contest while it lasts as knockout artists compete for the light heavyweight title in Salt Lake City.

Many were surprised to see Khalil Rountree get the next shot at Alex Pereira’s title but in some ways, the match-up speaks for itself.

A lot is going to be made from now up to October 5 about Rountree’s comments regarding his willingness to stand and strike with the former GLORY kickboxer.

Despite rating his skills as a fighter and his conduct as a person, a former training partner of his isn’t sure that he can hang in there against “Poatan”.

Carlos Prates Can’t See How Khalil Rountree Will Compete With Alex Pereira On The Feet

In a recent interview with Sherdog.com, breakout welterweight Carlos Prates gave his thoughts on the main event clash at 205 pounds.

As someone who has spent some time in the company of Rountree, he was able to give an educated prediction for this fight.

Prates, like many, simply doesn’t believe that Rountree will be able to have success when striking with Pereira, even if he has been very effective on the feet.

The 170-pounder picked out Magomed Ankalaev, who many expected would be next for the title shot, as the only fighter that might be able to cause Pereira some problems, likely due to his grappling game.

“To be honest, I train before with Khalil Rountree. He’s a nice guy, he’s a good fighter but I don’t think he can fight with ‘Poatan’. ‘Poatan’ is a different level of striking. I also see an interview of Khalil, he saying he have no plans to try take down so I think he, the first round, ‘Poatan’ gonna knock him out and that’s it. In light heavyweight, maybe Ankalaev can fight good against him but that’s it. Other guys, I don’t think they win the fight against ‘Poatan’. now ‘Poatan’ is the guy of the moment, the guy of the UFC right now.”

Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight!

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

If you see fewer of your favorite Brazilian MMA fighters in this column in the coming weeks, know that it’s not by my choice. On Friday (Aug. 30, 2024), a Brazilian Supreme Court Judge, Alexandre de Moraes, officially blocked X — the social media platform formerly known as Twitter — after owner Elon Musk failed to comply with the judge’s order to remove accounts from the platform that were breaking Brazilian law. Musk has declared Moraes an “evil dictator cosplaying as a judge” and intends to continue his fight for free speech.

Many have suggested using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to get around the banning, but Judge Moraes has instituted a harsh penalty of $ 8,874 per day for any Brazilians caught using that workaround. Safe to say, X is not looking worth the risk for most Brazilians.

Paulo Costa is one of the most active Brazilian UFC fighters on Twitter, well-known for his silly juice memes and goofy antics like stealing Merab Dvalishvili’s meals from the UFC Performance Institute (PI). Social media has been a huge boon in growing Costa’s fanbase, but the Brazilian made it clear he will NOT be risking that massive fine. In one post, he wrote, “Bye MY EVERYONE, I will not pay 8,000 $ . Daily to be here.”

Check out all of the Brazilian’s reaction Tweets below:

Now, I’m not a lawyer. My Portuguese is worse than Mike Goldberg’s. I don’t claim to understand the full extent of this ruling, but I have some thoughts on potential workarounds. Can an athlete like Costa fire up some Tweets while out of the country in Las Vegas for a fight? Could he hire a US-based social media manager or even a training partner, then text that person his various thoughts to be posted online? Can he still sell his account, which has 640k followers and surely carries some monetary value?

One way or another, the MMA social media landscape may change quite a bit in the coming days.

Genuine question, because I have no idea: who is the most successful Sumo athlete to crossover into MMA? I remember that Lyoto Machida had some Sumo in his background, so he’s surely the answer if that counts.

The UFC heavyweight division has been a hot topic in MMA circles lately. Dana White is adamant about booking current champ Jon Jones against Stipe Miocic in 2024. On the flip side, fans seem more interested in seeing “Bones” take on Tom Aspinall who defended his interim belt against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 via first-round TKO.

Jones has yet to defend his UFC heavyweight championship since beating Ciryl Gane for it in March 2023. A shoulder injury forced him out of action for almost a year, and the delay in his return has led to many opposing Miocic getting a title shot despite not fighting in over three years.

Although there’s no guarantee that it will happen, Frank Mir has picked Jones to beat Aspinall if they ever fight in the UFC…

Frank Mir Believes Jon Jones Has A 90% Chance Of Beating Tom Aspinall In The UFC Heavyweight Division

Mir discussed a potential fight between Jones and Aspinall on the talkSPORT MMA YouTube channel recently. He acknowledged that the English heavyweight is quite skilled but just doesn’t see him beating the UFC light heavyweight GOAT in the next 12 months.

“Jon’s the GOAT of our sport right now. I get that Tom, and I totally don’t blame him. I would do everything if I was Tom Aspinall. I would do everything I possibly could, maybe show up at his house, get him pissed enough to take that fight because that could just catapult his career.”

The former UFC heavyweight champ believes that Aspinall won’t be able to submit or even take down Jones due to the latter’s superior wrestling. He backed this claim by mentioning Jones’ two wins over Daniel Cormier, arguably one of the best wrestlers to ever fight in the UFC.

“If you said, put my money down on it. If they fought this year or fought within 12 months from now, from what I know training with Jon, from what I’ve seen from Tom, I think Jon has about a 70 to 80, 90% chance of winning the fight.”

“If Tom closes distance, he’s never submitting Jon. And, Jon outwrestles him absolutely. They had a take down contest, he can’t take Jon down one time, zero. Absolutely zero. Jon’s wrestling is unreal. If Jon had gone a different path in life, and maybe had not problem in school, he would have absolutely been the Olympic world champion at wrestling, you know. That’s just the part of me. He outwrestled Cormier, you know what I mean? Cormier’s accolades in wrestling are through the roof.”

Mir added that Aspinall’s explosive and fast striking, especially for a heavyweight, could be his only way to victory against Jones. He remembered the likes of Vitor Belfort and Dominick Reyes who had success against “Bones” due to their speed advantage in striking exchanges.

Interestingly, former rival Quinton “Rampage” Jackson also favored Jones to win against Aspinall for similar reasons in a recent interview with Inside Fighting. The former UFC light heavyweight kingpin praised the interim UFC heavyweight champ’s skills but doesn’t think it’ll be enough for him to unify the title against the current undisputed champion.

MMA: Mixed Martial Arts

Todd Welle | @UFCFightPass, Twitter

Welcome to the latest edition of Missed Fists where we shine a light on fights from across the globe that may have been overlooked in these hectic times where it seems like there’s an MMA show every other day.

After a lovely two-week break, I am back in action and judging by the excellent work done by my pal, Jed Meshew, it looks like the MMA world continued to churn out the hits.

Did you see that sweet Contender Series KO?

Have you ever seen the rain… make a complete mess of a cagefighting show?

While nothing quite so wacky happened this week, to say we weren’t blessed with a menagerie of memorable images would be false, starting with maybe the most gruesome knee knockout of 2024 from Anthony Pettis’ latest event.

(Big thanks as always to @Barrelelapierna for their weekly lists of the best KOs and submissions, and to @Grabaka_Hitman for uploading many of the clips you see here. Give them a follow and chip in on Patreon if you can.)

Elvin Romero vs. Todd Welle

Elvin Romero hit the switch 90 seconds into his fight with Todd Welle, sizing him up against the cage and delivering a knee to the head that not only knocked Welle for a loop, but immediately opened a bloody cut on his head.

GROSS. Who wants to watch this kind of thing?

Oh, here’s another angle, courtesy of Pettis himself.

I don’t know what Romero has been doing to prepare his knees for these situations, but if you’ve got some 2x4s that need to be broken, I now know a guy who can do it for cheap.

Anthony Pettis FC 12 is available for replay on UFC Fight Pass.

Alexis Pacheco vs. Gerardo Xango Ochoa
Paulina Vargas vs. Rosselyn Chavira

Check out this beautiful setup at Supreme Fight Night 6 in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Alexis Pacheco didn’t just have opponent Gerardo Xango Ochoa biting on this takedown fake, he downright chomped down on it before being served the real entree: A jumping knee knockout. Unsurprisingly, Ochoa looked dazed after the stoppage, probably because he’s still waiting to stuff that takedown attempt.

No tricky stuff needed for Paulina Vargas, who wrapped up a third-round knockout by walking down Rosselyn Chavira.

SFN 6 is available for free replay on YouTube.

Kameron Shamsi vs. Josh Gomez
Rogerio Matias vs. Martin Farley
Anderson Ferreira vs. Rogerio Matias
Lucas Barros vs. Bruno Dantas

How about some more free MMA?

At a Melee Combat Championship event (watch here) in Leander, Texas, amateur featherweight Kameron Shamsi planted Josh Gomez with this spinning backfist.

One could argue that the referee stepped in a tad early, but I saw at as him rewarding Shamsi for a stylish strike. Sorry Mr. Gomez, sometimes you just get cracked and it’s better to live to fight another day.

Over in Sao Paulo at Centurion FC 22 (watch here), Rogerio Matias was somehow both the hammer and the nail in the same night.

In his first fight of the night, Matias scored a massive KO of Martin Farley to advance in a one-night tournament.

All good, right?

Wrong. Very wrong.

Matias ran into Anderson Ferreira in the final and despite his unwavering confidence, he discovered that swagger alone isn’t the best defense when your opponent is lobbing haymakers at you. Let’s hope Matias remembers the good times more than the bad (assuming he remembers anything from that night at all).

Elsewhere in non-tournament action, Lucas Barros added to the pile of knockout knees this week, launching one right up the middle to end Bruno Dantas.

Henerson Duarte vs. Jeferson Costa
Andre Miranda vs. Raimundo Costa

There’s no good place to get knocked out, but Sao Paulo was apparently particularly bad this past weekend as Jungle Fight 129 also saw its fair share of nasty finishes.

Henerson Duarte unleashed the HELLbow to cause Jeferson Costa to sink sleepily to the canvas.

And Andre Miranda shined in the main event, annihilating Raimundo Costa’s liver to claim a vacant heavyweight title.

Vinicios Santana vs. Wanderlly Lino

Heading north to Soldado Combat 3 in Brasilia, we find one more spectacular KO as Vinicios Santana appeared to juuuuuuuuuust catch Wanderlly Lino with the tips of his knuckles.

More than enough to flatten Lino, that’s for sure.

Lerryan Douglas vs. Javier Reyes
Luis Francischinelli vs. Victor Kuiks
Eduardo Chapolin vs. Igor Siqueira
Xie Bin vs. Masuto Kawana

Hope you kept that Fight Pass handy, because we’ve got two more stops to make, first at LFA 190 in Commerce, Calif.

Lerryan Douglas continued to make his case for a UFC callup, rattling off a third-straight knockout victory with this power left hook against Javier Reyes.

The win made Douglas the interim LFA featherweight champion and if he can’t at least get a Contender Series nod, it feels like we’re doing this wrong.

Luis Francischinelli showed off a heavy left hand as well, but not before rocking Victor Kuiks with a knee first.

He put a serious exclamation point on that one.

In the main event, Eduardo Chapolin secured his first defense of his flyweight title, needing less than 90 seconds to put Igor Siqueira down.

That’s three straight wins and eight in the past nine for Chapolin, who could also step into even brighter lights soon.

One man we know will see octagon action soon is Road to UFC hopeful Xie Bin, who punched his way to a featherweight tournament final this past weekend at UFC APEX in Las Vegas.

Two monster right hands, one win away from officially joining the UFC. Xie fights for a contract on Nov. 23 at UFC Macau, where he faces Zhu Kangjie.

Video! Fighter Resets Gruesome Nose Break Mid-Fight

by Site Admin ~ August 30th, 2024

Brazilian fighter Mauricio Queiroz not only lost his undercard bout earlier tonight (Fri., Aug. 30, 2024) at LFA 191 from inside Ginasio do Povilho in Sao Paulo, Brazil, but the light heavyweight power puncher had to reset a broken nose during the fight.

Fight fans are going to be without a UFC event this weekend, but they were treated to a Friday evening card from Brazil. LFA usually produces good action from start to finish so even the undercard had a chance to be memorable. That’s exactly what happened, but not for the reason you may think.

Instead of a superhuman knockout or comeback submission, fight fans witnessed one of the worst nose breaks in recent mixed martial arts (MMA) memory. It happened during Queiroz’s showdown with undefeated Brazilian fighter, Guilherme Pat, who is a towering specimen for the 205-pound division at a staggering 6’5”. Pat brought a 4-0 record into the cage on Friday and from what he’s done so far in his career fight fans were expecting a standup affair.

Fortunately, Pat did not disappoint. His early efforts eventually paid dividends and left Queiroz’s nose completely smashed in. The Brazilian fighter eventually got a moment to catch is breath during the fight and tried to reset his nose. It seemed to work, but that didn’t stop Pat from continuing his offensive onslaught and doing more damage to the nose. He eventually stopped Queiroz in the third round with heavy punches along the cage as the referee had seen enough and stepped in.

Check out the moment Queiroz tried resetting his nose in the above player and the TKO finish by Pat below:
