Cuban born heavyweight Mijain Lopez just set a record at the Olympics that may never be broken.

The 41-year-old Greco-Roman wrestler wrapped up a fifth consecutive gold medal at 130kg on Tuesday in Paris, an achievement that set several records for the legendary grappler. He defeated fellow Cuban born wrestler Yasmani Acosta Fernandez, a representative of Chile. Fernandez previously left his home country because he knew he may never get the chance to make an Olympic team with Lopez still competing.

Despite his prudent decision, Fernandez still came up short, with Lopez winning the match in a shutout via a 6-0 score.

Lopez becomes the first person in Olympic wrestling history to win five gold medals. He’s also the first athlete in any sport to win the same event five times.

With his win, Lopez also ties Germany’s Wilfried Dietrich for the most medals ever won in wrestling with five total.

Lopez is also the oldest Olympic wrestling medalist ever at 41, just a couple of weeks shy of his 42nd birthday.

In addition to his remarkable run at the Olympics, Lopez is also a five-time World Champion and three-time silver medalist at the World Championships of wrestling.

Following the match and his historic win, Lopez removed his shoes and left them in the center of the mat, which is a wrestler’s way of retiring from the sport.

Donald Trump has a fondness of mixed martial arts and can often be found attending UFC events.

The former US president has a plethora of American UFC stars on his side — with Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal being the most notable. Despite their support, the 78-year-old has picked against his fellow patriots when asked about his favorite fighter.

During a recent interview, Donald Trump showered Dana White with praise for his irreplaceable work with the UFC.

“Ah, Dana. There’s nobody like him,” Trump said during a Kik stream with Adin Ross. “I always say, everybody can be replaced, except Dana.”

“That guy travels the world looking for fighters… From countries nobody ever heard of. That’s where he finds the best fighters.”

“He cannot be replaced. He’s truly great and what he does.”

Donald Trump then revealed the man that he considers his favorite to ever compete inside the octagon.

“I think Khabib [is my favorite fighter]. I mean, how good is he? Khabib was 29 [or] 28 and 0, and then his father died and he stopped.”

“I don’t think he ever lost a round. He fought many times, he never lost a round.”

Trump continued, detailing how his recent brief moment with Khabib Nurmagomedov played out.

“I got to meet him at a fight, two fights ago… I met Khabib, though… He came to me and said, ‘You’re the man that can stop the war.'”

“He knows they’re his people on both sides. There’s so many people dying in that war.”

“We weren’t talking about fighting, we were talking about a different kind of fighting. A much worse kind of fighting.”

“He was very concerned about that whole thing, that war. He said, ‘You can get it stopped.’ And I can get it stopped.”

Trump then made a promise to Khabib and all those in favor of ending the war.

“If I win the election, the first thing I’m going to do is get Putin and get Zelenskyy, I know them both well, and get them to make a deal because it’s crazy.”

The UFC’s annual pay-per-view event in Abu Dhabi has an incredible main event with Ilia Topuria defending his featherweight title against BMF champion Max Holloway at UFC 308. With plans for that matchup expected to take place earlier in October at UFC 307, that leaves a glaring hole in the headline spot for that card.

On an all-new edition of Heck of a Morning, MMA Fighting’s Mike Heck reacts to Dana White announcing Topuria vs. Holloway as the main event for the Oct. 26 card, Robert Whittaker vs. Khamzat Chimaev as the co-main event, and other bouts announced and confirmed. Additionally, topics include what will now headline UFC 307 on Oct. 5, if the promotion would go to Arman Tsarukyan fighting for the interim lightweight title with Islam Makhachev injured, Dana White’s recent comments about Tom Aspinall, and much more.

You can listen live to Heck of a Morning Tuesdays and Fridays at 10 a.m. ET on the MMA Fighting Twitter Spaces.

UFC Fight Night: Cannonier v Imavov

Jared Cannonier and Caio Borralho have been summoned to headline at the APEX.

The UFC announced Tuesday that Cannonier vs. Borralho is the main event of UFC Vegas 96, which takes place Aug. 24 at UFC APEX in Las Vegas. This matchup pits MMA Fighting’s No. 7-ranked middleweight Cannonier against a fighter yet to to be beaten inside the octagon.

Cannonier (17-7) is coming off of a controversial fourth-round TKO loss to Nassourdine Imavov at UFC Louisville this past June. The loss snapped a win streak for the one-time title challenger, following back-to-back wins over Marvin Vettori and Sean Strickland.

This is Cannonier’s fourth straight main event booking, with three of those four appearances taking place at the APEX.

Borralho (16-1, 1 NC) headlines in the UFC for the first time after several co-main event outings at Fight Night events. He is 6-0 in the UFC, with his most recent win being a second-round knockout of veteran Paul Craig.

Chael Sonnen ‘concerned’ about Tony Ferguson

by Site Admin ~ August 6th, 2024

It’s been five years since former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson has won a fight.  Last weekend, in Abu Dhabi, Ferguson lost his eighth consecutive fight.  He was submitted by Michael Chiesa in the first round.  He removed his gloves following the fight and left one inside the octagon, but he did not retire.

Former UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen is concerned about Ferguson and explained why in a video posted to his YouTube channel.

“When Tony gets to the post-fight press conference, he stands up, takes the mic and he made some statements that were simply fiction.  But they were concerning to me,” Sonnen said.  “I took him at his word, and his world was flat frightening.  His words were, ‘Hey, if all these thousands of fans are going to come out here and spend all this money to support me, they’ll follow me somewhere else.”

Sonnen questioned if Ferguson drew any fans to Abu Dhabi and took issue with Ferguson removing his gloves after the fight if he wasn’t going to retire.  But what concerned Sonnen the most was Ferguson not even attempting to defend the rear-naked choke by Chiesa.

“Zero people booked a ticket, flew over there, did whatever you had to do to come over there and support Tony,” Sonnen said.  “When a guy takes his gloves off and it’s a retirement, you cheer for him.  It’s called etiquette.  Never in the history of any sport has somebody called it a day and not gotten a standing ovation.”

“A nation champion wrestler with a black belt under Eddie Bravo just got jobbed out in the first round by a move that you learn on your first day,” Sonnen continued.  “My problem is there wasn’t a hand fight.  That’s my problem.”

“If I were to take somebody that was not a trained fighter…  Just a guy, and I was to put him in that technique, he naturally, with no training, he naturally is going to come to the problem which is the arm around his neck.  That didn’t happen.  That is my problem.”

Sonnen went on to say that he has ‘fear and concern’ that Ferguson will be able to land a fight outside of the UFC.  “That’s concerning to me,” he said.
