Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is back in the Arabian Gulf this afternoon (Sat., Aug. 3, 2024) with UFC Abu Dhabi on ABC. The mixed martial arts (MMA) event, which takes place inside Etihad Arena — a.k.a. “Fight Island” — in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, will be streamed LIVE on ABC and ESPN+. The main event is a Bantamweight title eliminator with Cory Sandhagen meeting the undefeated Umar Nurmagomedov. The co-main does not feature Nick Diaz because of “travel issues.” His bout with Vicente Luque was scrapped, but in its place we have Shara Magomedov fighting Michal Oleksiejczuk.

UFC Abu Dhabi’s main card didn’t lose all its veterans when Diaz fell out, though.

Indeed, Tony Ferguson vs. Michael Chiesa is on the main card in what might be (or should be) Ferguson’s last UFC fight. There’s also Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Marlon Vera, Mackenzie Dern vs. Loopy Godinez and Joel Alvarez vs. Elves Brener.

The “Prelims” card features Azamat Murzakanov vs. Alonzo Menifield. The undercard also includes Guram Kutateladze vs. Jordan Vucenic and Victoria Dudakova vs. Sam Hughes.

This is the UFC Abu Dhabi live blog for Tony Ferguson vs. Michael Chiesa, the main card welterweight fight on Saturday evening.

One of the more beloved fighters on the UFC roster, Ferguson has had a rough go over the past few years. Currently on a seven-fight losing streak, “El Cucuy” has not won since 2019, causing many fans to wonder when enough will be enough for the former interim lightweight champion. Not yet apparently, as Ferguson moves back up to welterweight for this contest and the hope that he can reignite some of his former magic at least one more time.

Like Ferguson, Chiesa is a past Ultimate Fighter winner on a losing streak. Chiesa has dropped three straight fights at welterweight, though it has been against top opposition. Already open about being near the end of his career, if Chiesa loses to Ferguson on Saturday, this could be the final time we see “Maverick” competing inside the octagon.

In the eyes of UFC CEO Dana White, the rejection of the settlement in the UFC’s antitrust, class-action lawsuits was more than just business — it was personal.

White recently sat down for an interview with Kevin Iole. During it, he made his first public comments about the class-action lawsuits since Judge Richard Boulware formally rejected the $ 335 settlement from the UFC’s parent company, TKO Holdings Group.

White feels that Boulware’s actions went beyond legalities and may have been based on a personal grudge, with White — who says he usually lets the UFC’s legal team deal with matters involving things like this — claiming that he and Lorenzo Fertitta, former UFC CEO, went to high school with Boulware.

“It’s getting to a point now where this feels personal. You know I went to high school with this guy? Me and Lorenzo went to high school with him. I don’t know what me or Lorenzo did to him in high school, but this seems very, very personal.

“I don’t think I did anything to this guy. I don’t know what the hell happened, but there’s no doubt in my mind that this feels absolutely personal. And whatever it is with this guy, we’ll let the lawyers deal with it, and it is what it is.”

Dana White Claims Judge’s Rejection Of UFC Antitrust Lawsuit Settlement Stems From ‘Personal’ High School Grudge

In March, TKO agreed to the $ 335 million payout to settle a pair of class-action lawsuits brought against the UFC, [Cung] Le et al. vs. Zuffa and [Kajan] Johnson et al. vs. Zuffa. The plaintiffs were seeking $ 1.6 billion in damages and contractual changes to UFC contracts.

Boulware, in previous weeks, had express concern about the settlement for various reasons. Firstly, the amount obtained in the settlement greatly differed from what the plaintiffs were originally seeking, creating concern over how much each fighter would actually receive from this.

Secondly, each class-action lawsuit had a different focus, with the Le case centered around money and the Johnson case focused on contractual changes. Boulware expressed worry that this settlement did little to nothing for fighters represented in the Johnson case.

A jury trial is currently scheduled to begin on October 28 for Le vs. Zuffa. Johnson vs. Zuffa, meanwhile, is still in a very early portion of the legal process.

For the 19th time in the promotion’s history, the UFC octagon is in Abu Dhabi.  Etihad Arena hosts today’s UFC event. The fight card is headlined by a bantamweight fight between second-ranked Cory Sandhagen and undefeated Umar Nurmagomedov.

Sandhagen (17-4) will enter the fight riding a three-fight winning streak. Nurmagomedov (17-0) hasn’t tasted defeat and has finished three of his five UFC opponents. Ranked 10th in the division, Nurmagomedov has the opportunity to pick up the biggest win of his career.

Terence Crawford likes what he’s seen from Jake Paul.

“The Problem Child” defeated BKFC star Mike Perry via sixth-round knockout earlier this month, prompting a mixture of reactions from the MMA community. Crawford, arguably the best pound-for-pound boxer on the planet, isn’t among Paul’s many detractors.

“I think Jake is getting better,” Crawford said on The MMA Hour. “He may need to work on his stamina a little bit, but for the most part, I gained a lot of respect for Jake because he’s not a YouTuber that’s just boxing just to box. He actually trains and actually wants to get better and actually has got better, really putting his time, focus, and energy into boxing, so you’ve got to respect that.”

Paul rose to fame as a YouTube star, actor, and social media influencer, before committing to a pro boxing career in 2020. He’s since knocked off a litany of stars from the MMA world including former UFC champions Anderson Silva and Tyron Woodley, as well as Perry, Nate Diaz, and Ben Askren.

The lone loss of Paul’s career came against Tommy Fury, a reality TV star with a legitimate boxing background who also happens to be the brother of former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. That result raised questions as to how successful Paul will be should he face more experienced boxers in the future.

Paul, 27, has said on multiple occasions that his goal is to win a boxing championship. At the moment, it appears that Paul would be best suited to compete in the cruiserweight division, and Crawford sees a contender path for Paul there.

“It’s possible,” Crawford said. “Listen, a lot of people write Jake off, but Jake can punch with that right hand. He’s got a nice right hand. He’s building himself up just like a regular boxer. People got to understand, people look at Jake and say, ‘Well, Jake, he needs to fight me. Jake needs to fight me. Jake needs to fight me.’ Everybody’s grabbing for the attention to fight Jake at this moment, but it’s just like a professional boxer coming up in the rankings. They’re not going straight to the champion. They’re going to work their way up and fight the best fights they can learn from. Not get beat, learn from.

“Right now Jake is still in the learning process, he’s only got [11] fights, so he’s taking his time and that’s what he should do. Take your time, keep getting better, keep learning, new tricks and things like that in the ring, keep getting more experience, then sooner or later once you start picking up the fights with better competition, then you’ll be ready for those moments because you build the ring IQ. You build the stamina. You build everything that you need to know in those early fights to keep gradually getting better in bigger and better fights.”

As much as Crawford encourages Paul to keep refining his craft, he could do without one upcoming Paul venture: a high-profile fight with boxing legend Mike Tyson on Nov. 15 in Arlington, Texas.

Paul and Tyson were supposed to fight on July 20 before Perry had to step in for Tyson, who pulled out of that date due to health problems interfering with his training. Many, including UFC star Dustin Poirier, have questioned whether the bout should proceed given that Tyson recently turned 58 and has not competed professionally since 2005.

Crawford is among those uninterested in the re-booking.

“I think Mike Tyson is an icon in boxing and he’s done a lot for boxing in his own right and I just think Mike is past his prime,” Crawford said. “Mike is old. I wouldn’t want to see Mike go in the ring and get hurt. A fight where he’s just doing it just for the money or entertainment, I just think him having his health problems is another added reason why I don’t want to see him in the ring.”

Crawford challenges WBA junior middleweight champion Israil Madrimov this Saturday.
