Exciting UFC Fighter Dumped For Not Being Exciting

UFC Fight Night: Gravely v Maness

Wouldn’t be the first time UFC made a “big mistake” with a hasty goodbye…

UFC is no longer in the Nate Maness business.

That might come as a surprise to fans, considering “Mayhem” is coming off back-to-back victories over Mateus Mendonca and Jimmy Flick. In addition, Maness already has three post-fight performance bonuses in just seven fights with UFC.

“We received word back from the UFC matchmaker last week about why we weren’t re-signed,” Maness (16-3) wrote on social media. “We were told the Flyweight division is comprised of exciting fighters and he doesn’t view me as exciting. I suppose half your fights being finishes-bonuses isn’t good enough now. So there ya have it, we will not be getting a new contract.”

Maness, 33, is a seasoned veteran with more than a decade of cage-fighting experience. More than half of his professional victories have come by way of knockout or submission and “Mayhem” was considered a serious threat to the flyweight division.

Perhaps he can join this “great undefeated guy” in PFL.

UFC 304: Green v Pimblett

King Green had one of the most disappointing nights of his career at UFC 304.

The 50-fight veteran was looking to be the first fighter to beat Paddy Pimblett inside the octagon, but he instead was choked out in Round 1, losing by submission for the first time since 2009 and just the third time ever.

On Monday, Green reflected on the loss in his first public comments since Saturday’s event.

“What a day,” Green said in an Instagram Story. “Thank you, guys, for checking in on me. I’m OK, I guess. Shit happens. Feel like I slipped into some shit and it just went all went the perfect way, I had a bad night. No excuses. Shit happens.

“I live by a code: Kill or be killed. Today I got killed. Let the ridicule begin, I know what comes with this. You guys can talk your shit, I know what comes with this.”

Making Green’s loss particularly befuddling is that he initiated the grappling with Pimblett, a larger fighter known for his ground skills. Pimblett was having success in the standup, but it was still surprising to see Green go to his wrestling so early in the fight. Shortly after a Green takedown, Pimblett secured a triangle choke that eventually left Green sleeping.

Pimblett improved to 6-0 in the UFC with the win and is expected to have a number next to his name when the promotion next updates its official rankings.

Shavkat Rakhmonov demands title shot against Belal Muhammad: "Keep your word"

Before the belt was even wrapped around Belal Muhammad’s waist, Shavkat Rakhmonov was shooting his shot on social media.

The UFC’s return to Manchester on Saturday night saw the rise of a new welterweight world champion as ‘Remember The Name’ delivered a mostly dominant performance against Leon Edwards in the UFC 304 headliner.

Belal Muhammad

Almost immediately following his unanimous decision victory over ‘Rocky,’ the division’s No. 3 ranked contender called for the first crack at Muhammad’s new hardware.

Shavkat

“Congratulations on your well-deserved victory, @bullyb170! I hope you keep your word and defend your title against me when you’re ready, champ,” Rakhmonov wrote on X.

Nomad’ is a perfect 18-0 in his mixed martial arts career, his last six wins coming inside the Octagon. Perhaps even more impressive is that Rakhmonov boasts a 100% finish rate, choking out Neil Magny, Geoff Neal, and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson in his last three outings.

Belal Muhammad welcomes Shavkat Rakhmonov’s challenge

Never one to back down from a challenge, Belal Muhammad gladly accepted Rakhmonov’s challenge as a first step toward establishing himself as the greatest welterweight of all time.

“Yeah, of course,” Muhammad said on fighting Rakhmonov at the UFC 304 post-fight press conference. “I’ve literally never turned down a fight. I’ve never backed down from anybody. I had so many people turn down fights against me so, now I’m at the top. I’m the man and for me, now it’s cementing my legacy as the best welterweight to ever do it.

“I’m not going to sit there and call out these random guys. Who’s next in line, who’s best in line. I’m going to show you who I am, what I can do. They thought Leon could walk through me, now I’m going to walk through all these other guys” (h/t BJPenn.com).

Bully B’ extended his unbeaten streak to 10 while simultaneously snapping Leon Edwards‘ undefeated run that began all the way back in May 2016.

UFC 302: Holland v Oleksiejczuk
Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images

Chris Curtis is healthy again and booked to fight Kevin Holland at UFC 307 on Oct. 5.

Multiple people with knowledge of the promotion’s plans confirmed the news to MMA Fighting on Monday after Curtis’ management team revealed the fight on social media.

The fight serves as Curtis’ first appearance since suffering a torn hamstring in his split decision loss to Brendan Allen in April. That loss dropped Curtis to 2-2 with one no contest over his past five bouts.

In his return, the Ohio native attempts to get back on track after bouncing between wins and losses over his past six fights.

Meanwhile, Holland sticks around at middleweight after returning to the division for a win over Michał Oleksiejczuk in June at UFC 302. That win halted a two-fight losing skid after Holland fell to Michael Page and Jack Della Maddalena in consecutive bouts.

UFC 307 is expected to take place in Salt Lake City.

As of now, UFC 307 hasn’t booked a main event but several fights have been confirmed for the card, including ex-bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling facing Movsar Evloev in a featherweight bout.
