If Leon Edwards is able to defeat Belal Muhammad at UFC 304, lead commentator Jon Anik sees plenty of competition in the future from his own division.

Edwards and Muhammad close the show at Saturday’s pay-per-view event in Manchester. With so much talk about “superfights” and two-division champions, Edwards has joined into the conversations in regards to moving up to 185 pounds and challenging for the middleweight title, or possibility by facing lightweight champion Islam Makhachev.

For Anik, as impressive as being on a short list like UFC two-division champs can be, he believes putting together a run of defenses in your own division — and against your own division — is more valuable.

“I’m so happy to get this question and answer a question about Leon Edwards’ legacy, and not necessarily about a superfight,” Anik told MMA Fighting. “Because all of these guys, monetarily, if that’s a big deal and the difference, deserve that superfight, but Kamaru Usman is a legend with crazy ice on his left wrist and a great checking account balance, I’m sure, because he didn’t move up, because he sustained and continued to defend in the welterweight division and chase records.

“So oftentimes, I think dynasties and long-reigning champions are really how legacies are made. And I think Leon Edwards, potentially, is on the cusp of that.”

Edwards captured the title with an insane fifth-round knockout of Usman at UFC 278 in August 2022, and has since defended the belt successfully against Usman, as well as former interim champ Colby Covington.

Anik understands how impressive those wins are, along with Edwards’ near-decade long unbeaten streak. But adding some of the rising names in a loaded talent pool at 170 can potentially take Edwards to a top-tier level.

“The type of scalps that he could leave in his wake — like the ever deserving Belal Muhammad, and potentially the undefeated Shavkat Rakhmonov, [who] is all the rage with men and women alike,” Anik said. “Or Ian Machado Garry, who is brash, but probably as good as every word that comes out of his mouth, [or] Jack Della Madalena with an entire country that absolutely eats this sport three meals a day behind it. It’s a tremendous time to be Leon Edwards.”

Edwards is a sizable favorite to retain his title against Muhammad — who, like Edwards, is in the midst of a double-digit fight unbeaten streak. “Remember the Name” gets his first shot at UFC gold after dominating past title challenger Gilbert Burns in his most recent outing at UFC 288 in May 2023.

Anik, who calls Saturday’s action on the broadcast alongside former champs Daniel Cormier and Michael Bisping, is quite fascinated in Edwards continuing his long-term résumé-building process, along with the matchup with Muhammad.

“If you believe in Leon, the way I do skill for skill, there’s no reason why he wouldn’t be favored to beat all of these amazing fighters,” Anik explained. “So excited to see what he can do.

“It stands to reason that we’re getting the best versions of both of these guys [at UFC 304], and I can’t f*cking wait.”

Sean Strickland compares Belal Muhammad to a terrorist

Sean Strickland may have taken things a little too far in his rivalry with UFC 304 headliner Belal Muhammad.

Crossing the line is pretty much Strickland’s official brand at this point, but fight fans weren’t exactly thrilled with his latest dig at Muhammad on social media.

Sean Strickland

“Belal looks like why I have to take my shoes off in airports…..” Strickland commented on Instagram.

While ‘Remember The Name’ hasn’t responded to the ill-advised comment, Strickland drew the ire of users on both Instagram and X, many of them condemning the “disgusting” statement.

“Sean Strickland implying Belal Muhammad is a terrorist simply because he’s Muslim. Disgusting & despicable behavior but I wouldn’t expect any less & you know a large swath of the MMA community will cheerlead this behavior,” one user wrote.

Sean Strickland

Another noted how Strickland had nothing to say about another Muslim fighter—Islam Makhachev—while sitting next to him during the UFC 302 press conference in June.

“It’s funny how Sean didn’t [say] anything like that when he was sitting next to Islam at the press conference. He went backstage and said it in one-on-one interviews.”

Sean Strickland and Belal Muhammad trade barbs following UFC P.I. encounter in 2023

Strickland and Muhammad have taken jabs back and forth over the years, but things seemed to escalate last year when ‘Tarzan’ shared a video online that featured Muhammad training in the background. Strickland labeled the top-ranked welterweight ‘thunder thumbs’ in the clip, which you can see below:

Unenthused by Strickland’s antics, Belal Muhammad issued a response shortly after, telling the former middleweight champ that he’s simply “not that guy.”

“This guy’s trying to act tough again on social media. Looking for clout chasing, trying to get views for a podcast,” Muhammad said. “I offered to fight you. You turned it down. You putting out this video of you recording from a distance, muttering under your breath, thunder thumbs, which is not even clever. Your racist hillbilly fans are saying ‘Oh man you’re a beast’, ‘you’re a man’, look how crazy he is.

But look at the distance. It’s like someone recording a lion in the wild. You stay at a safe distance. You don’t get into the danger zone. You didn’t get into the danger zone. Just stop this. You’re not that guy. You’re more of like an emo Peewee Herman.”

Strickland snapped back, welcoming a fight with Muhammad anytime, anywhere.

“Man, you guys believe this f*cking clown? Lmao ok p*ssy tomorrow 11am,” he wrote. “Gloves, no gloves idc….”

Sean Strickland

As far as we know, that encounter never happened, but if Belal Muhammad manages to defeat Leon Edwards for the welterweight title in Manchester, perhaps we’ll see Strickland move up and try to settle things with ‘Bully B’ inside the Octagon.

Sean O’Malley’s bantamweight championship will be on the line when mixed martial arts’ leading promotion arrives at the Sphere for UFC 306 on September 14.

The promotion will stage its sophomore celebration of Mexican Independence Day on September 14. While Las Vegas is once again the host destination, the Octagon will be in a much different environment this time around.

Instead of the T-Mobile Arena for the second straight year, the 2024 edition of Noche UFC is set to go down inside the unique Sphere venue. In the lead-up, UFC CEO Dana White has promised a spectacle like nothing seen before.

And he confirmed this week that O’Malley will be tasked with closing it out in defense of his belt opposite Merab Dvalishvili. White announced the expected news in a video uploaded to the UFC’s social media accounts on Friday night.

O’Malley Targets Second Successful Defense At The Expense Of Dvalishvili

When the pair share the Octagon inside the unique surroundings of the Sphere, O’Malley will be looking to make Dvalishvili the second victim of his title reign.

O’Malley (18-1, 1 NC) captured the 135-pound gold in memorable fashion last August, concluding the Boston-held UFC 292 pay-per-view event with a shocking second-round knockout of longtime champ Aljamain Sterling. The result brought “Funk Master’s” record-breaking rule to an end and set up the chance for his teammate to avenge the setback.

While he’s had to wait for “Sugar” to settle unfinished business with Marlon Vera at UFC 299 in Miami this past March, Dvalishvili (17-4) finally has his first shot at title glory in mixed martial arts booked in.

The Georgian has had to win 10 straight fights and go unbeaten since 2018 to make it happen. He’s most recently defeated three former champs, getting the better of José Aldo, Petr Yan, and Henry Cejudo on the scorecards to leave no doubt about his status as the unrivaled number one bantamweight contender.

UFC 299: O’Malley v Vera 2
Sean O’Malley | Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images

Sean O’Malley is set to star at Sphere.

UFC CEO Dana White announced Friday on social media that O’Malley will defend the bantamweight title against No. 1 contender Merab Dvalishvili in the main event of UFC 306, which takes place Sept. 14 at Sphere in Las Vegas. White has touted the pay-per-view show as a one-off, due to it being the most expensive production in promotional history.

Due to a sponsorship deal, the event is officially branded as Riyadh Season Noche UFC.

O’Malley seeks the second defense of his championship, following title fight wins against Aljamain Sterling and Marlon “Chito” Vera. “Sugar” has won six straight fights, excluding a no contest against Pedro Munhoz.

On the strength of a 10-fight win streak, Dvalishvili has kept himself at the very front of the contenders’ line for the past few years. Were it not for his close friend and training partner Sterling reigning as champion, it’s likely Dvalishvili would have challenged for UFC gold earlier. As it stands, he now gets his shot at O’Malley with Sterling having lost and moved to the featherweight division.

White also announced the co-main event as the trilogy bout between TUF 32 coaches, UFC flyweight champion Alexa Grasso and former champ Valentina Shevchenko. Grasso captured the title with a fourth-round submission of Shevchenko in 2023, then defended it with a controversial split draw at the promotion’s first Noche UFC event.

A re-booked matchup between two-time featherweight title challenger Brian Ortega and top up-and-comer Diego Lopes highlights the rest of the pay-per-view main card, which also includes Daniel Zellhuber vs. Esteban Ribovics and Ode Osbourne vs. Ronaldo Rodriguez.

The complete UFC 306 fight card can be seen below.

  • Sean O’Malley vs. Merab Dvalishvili
  • Alexa Grasso vs. Valentina Shevchenko
  • Brian Ortega vs. Diego Lopes
  • Esteban Ribovics vs. Daniel Zellhuber
  • Ode Osbourne vs. Ronaldo Rodríguez
  • Ignacio Bahamondes vs. Manuel Torres
  • Irene Aldana vs. Norma Dumont
  • Kevin Borjas vs. Edgar Chairez
  • Yazmin Jáuregui vs. Ketlen Souza
  • Raul Rosas Jr. vs. Aori Qileng

In the UFC 304 co-main event on Saturday at Co-op Live in Manchester, England, Salford’s Tom Aspinall defends his interim heavyweight championship belt against fourth-ranked Curtis Blaydes in a rematch. Their first meeting in July 2022 ended in just 15 seconds. Aspinall suffered a knee injury that ended the fight. He’ll look to erase that loss on Saturday.

UFC 304 is headlined by a welterweight title bout between champion Leon Edwards and second-ranked contender Belal Muhammad.  The main event is also a rematch.
