UFC 303: Machado Garry v Page

Michael Page may have fallen short against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 303, but that doesn’t mean he came away impressed by what he saw from the cocksure Irishman.

Page dropped a hard-fought unanimous decision at the June 29 pay-per-view, outclassing Garry on the feet but ultimately losing two rounds on the scorecards after succumbing to Garry’s grappling-heavy game plan. Afterward, UFC CEO Dana White publicly stated that the bout felt like a draw, much to Garry’s chagrin. But even despite the setback, Page’s takeaway was unequivocal when asked Wednesday on The MMA Hour whether Garry is championship martial in the talent-rich UFC welterweight division.

“Not all. No,” Page said. “Because if that’s the game you’re going to go [to] when you get a decent striker, then Leon [Edwards] is going to kill you anyway, then Shavkat [Rakhmonov] is going to kill you anyway. There’s a few guys in there that I just don’t see him surpassing.

“Even in some of the areas, he didn’t feel massively strong. I’m not even trying to be disrespectful to him, because again, he’s done his job, he was smart about how he kind of went by it. But for me, regardless, this game for me is about combat. It’s about fighting. Not about stealing wins. Even like I said, that last round, I didn’t necessarily need to stand up or need to let him stand up. I could’ve stayed there and just dragged it out and potentially got a better score in the third round and maybe that would’ve swayed it, but that’s not the game I’m in. I’m in a combat game. Like, I want to cause damage, I want to hurt people.

“So yeah, I don’t see him progressing to the top. I think he’s talented. I think he’ll always be around there, top 10, top five. And then he’ll keep losing out to certain people. But he is still talented, and obviously he’s got a loads of time to progress and get better anyway.”

Page, 37, is now 1-1 in his brief UFC career after scoring a blowout win over Kevin Holland in his promotional debut. His performance against Garry further showed that Page’s unique brand of striking presents problems for any contender in the UFC welterweight division, but he nonetheless remains disappointed in himself for the result. Page said he hasn’t yet watched the fight back, but he knows he’s going to be frustrated once he does.

“I’m tough on myself. I think there’s a lot of mistakes that I made,” Page said.

“I just wasn’t quite myself in there. For me, it just motivated me a bit more. Obviously, exactly what I said was going to happen happened. As much as Ian said he’s this level of a striker, he’s this fast, he didn’t want to strike with me. And I tell people the same thing all the time, when I’m bouncing around in front of you, it’s a very different game, and he went for a different plan. Again, there’s a couple decisions during the fight that I could’ve made and done better to maybe scrape the result, but that’s just not me.

“I prefer to go and get a big finish and I wanted to knock him out. So yeah, I’ve got a lot to adjust and adapt to, but I’m super motivated to get back. Super motivated.”

One of the big storylines to emerge from UFC 303 fight week was Garry’s accusation that an unnamed member of Page’s team offered $ 10,000 to a teammate of Garry’s at Chute Boxe for information on Garry’s preparation and game plan. Garry has continued to hammer that accusation in the aftermath of the bout, even calling for Page and his coaches to be “suspended for life” from MMA.

Page said he remains unclear about what Garry is speaking of.

“If somebody in my camp tried to [do that], no, I haven’t been told anything,” Page said.

“One hundred percent [it’d bother me if it was real], because I don’t need it. I don’t feel like I need it, especially for him. And again, I’m trying not to be disrespectful to him, because it’s not personal at all, but I don’t feel like I needed to get any extra information to do what I know I can do — or should’ve done, should I say — in that last fight.”

Page said he is currently on vacation but is already itching to get back into the gym. He is uninjured from the bout and fully expects to compete at least one more time in 2024, and he’s happy to test his skills against any 170-pound contender UFC wants to throw at him.

“I just need to get back in the winning column and in true ‘MVP’ fashion,” Page said. “I still feel like I haven’t actually showed myself in the UFC cage.”

Tracy Cortez is set to compete in the biggest fight of her career at UFC Denver this weekend (Sat., July 13, 2024).

UFC’s return to its origin state has crumbled in its build. Originally on tap for the main event was a Flyweight contender bout between former Strawweight champion, Rose Namajunas, and Maycee Barber. Unfortunately for Barber, she suffered an injury that led to her withdrawal and Cortez’s heroics, stepping up a week earlier than her planned match up against Miranda Maverick for UFC Vegas 95 next weekend (Sat., July 20, 2024).

The division’s title is currently stuck between the Alexa Grasso and Valentina Shevchenko rivalry. However, the champion, Grasso, has speculated Shevchenko might not make it to the planned Noche UFC event in Las Vegas’ Sphere on Sept. 14, 2024. Should there be any issues or a resort to other options, Cortez hopes to make a statement against Namajunas and slide into the title challenger role.

“I really want to fight for the belt,” Cortez told MMA Junkie. “I know there’s a lot of people ahead of me still. I know winning this fight, where it could move me to, and the performance I put on Saturday, I know everything that comes with it. If I get the opportunity and they grant me the opportunity to fight at The Sphere, I think it would be incredible history. Two Mexican women on Mexican Independence Day fighting on the biggest sport event ever. I think that would just be incredible. That’s something I never imagined and I feel like it’s just arm’s length. That is what I’m striving for, but at the end of the day, long-term goal, I am fighting for the belt.”

Cortez, 30, has been perfect in her 12-fight career (11-1) since she dropped her debut bout by second round guillotine against Cheri Muraski in August 2017. In her match up with Namajunas, she’ll be the former champion’s third fight at 125 pounds.

“Who doesn’t love Rose? She’s an incredible person, but unfortunately, we are in the fighting business,” Cortez said. “She wants to move up to 125 and we’re going to face each other. Whether it’s now or down the road, it just happens to be now. I have nothing bad to say about Rose and if anything, I’m excited for this challenge and I’m grateful she took this fight with me.

“I want to say I’m a true 125er,” she continued. “Sh*t, I could even fight at 135 but I’m a real Flyweight and I don’t think she’s yet to face someone like myself, and vice versa. I’ve never faced a former world champion, so it’s putting both of us in a good test.”

UFC urged to book blockbuster title super fight between Jon Jones and Alex Pereira it's the perfect time for it

Former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier has played up a long-rumored heavyweight super fight between promotional champions, Jon Jones and Alex Pereira – as soon as UFC 309 later this year, describing the massive clash as “blockbuster”.

Jones, the incumbent heavyweight champion, is all but officially set to return to action before the end of this annum in the main event of UFC 309, in a debut outing at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Expected to take on the returning former two-time heavyweight champion, Stipe Miocic, Rochester native, Jones has recently ramped up training for his return to the Octagon for the first time since March of last year.

Weighing up his immediate fighting future ahead of his comeback fight, Rochester native, Jones admitted he was not sure if he would continue competing after his bout with Miocic, however, amid links to a super fight the above-mentioned, Pereira, claimed there were many options still on the table for him.

UFC urged to go all-in on Jon Jones – Alex Pereira super fight

And one party willing the bout into fruition is the above-mentioned, Poirier, who believes the UFC should skip both Miocic, and current interim heavyweight champion, Tom Aspinall – and go ‘all-in’ on a fight between Jones and Pereira.

“If (Jon) Jones wrestles, I mean, Jones is lot bigger – I don’t know, Jones has never been knocked out,” Dustin Poirier told MMA FIghting while discussing a potential Jon Jones x Alex Pereira matchup. “Jones is not gonna play the game with him, he’s too smart. But also, moving to heavyweight might prolong his (Jones’) longevity – a heavyweight’s shelf live is a lot longer. And even with the heavyweight division, bro, Stipe’s (Miocic) been out a good bit, and like I was saying about (Michael) Chandler, we age quick.”

“Stipe could come back and be a completely different person,” Poirier continued. “… Aspinall is like, obviously legit, he’s the interim champion, he’s beat some good guys, but he doesn’t have that aura that Alex and Jones have. It’s the perfect time for it – it’s bigger, it’s a blockbuster [fight], bro. …Dude, Jon Jones versus Alex is the one.”

Enjoying a stunning victory at the end of last month, former middleweight champion, Pereira successfully defended his light heavyweight crown for the second time, taking out former gold holder, Jiri Prochazka with a thunderous second round high-kick KO – and subsequently called for a heavyweight leap.

FanDuel was hit with a $ 2,000 fine and forced to pay out more than $ 230,000 in wagers after accepting 34 bets on PFL fights that actually happened a week earlier.

The debacle unfolded back in 2022 when FanDuel took wagers on PFL fights that were scheduled to air on April 1 but in reality had already happened on March 25.

The event was a PFL Challengers series card that aired on tape delay on Fubo TV.

New Jersey gambling regulators handed down the fine, with FanDuel agreeing to pay it, although the company made no statement regarding the penalty.

In a letter made public on Monday, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement stated that FanDuel said it was not notified by its data-feed providers that the PFL card was pre-recorded and just airing at a later date. As a result, FanDuel created manual betting markets with information the company received from PFL

“FanDuel confirmed that its traders failed to confirm with PFL that the event had previously occurred and was being presented via a tape delay,” New Jersey Deputy Attorney General Gina DeAnnuntis wrote in the letter.

FanDuel informed the state that a total of 26 online wagers and eight retail bets were taken on the PFL fights. It wasn’t until International Betting Integrity — a company tasked with monitoring betting patterns and identifying potentially suspicious betting behavior — notified FanDuel that the company learned the event was pre-recorded.

As a result, FanDuel had to pay out wagers totaling $ 231,094 and the state required the company to update its internal controls to ensure a mistake like this doesn’t happen again.

Ngannou departed the UFC in January 2023 after failing to come to terms on a new contract.  He was quickly signed by the PFL in May 2023 but hasn’t made his promotional debut yet.  He fought twice as a professional boxer losing to Tyson Fury via split decision and to Anthony Joshua by knockout.
