Mike Malott will have to wait for his chance to rebound from his first UFC loss.

MMA Fighting confirmed with sources with knowledge of the change that Malott’s upcoming fight with Gilbert Urbina has been cancelled. The welterweight bout was to take place at UFC Denver on July 13.

Sportsnet was first to report the news.

Sources told MMA fighting that the withdrawal is on Urbina’s side, though it is not known why the fighter has been pulled from the bout. Malott will not face a new opponent at UFC Denver and is instead expected to be re-booked for later this year.

Malott later released a video explaining that he has been working through a difficult injury, so though it was Urbina who initially pulled out, Malott and his team decided it would be best not to stay on the July 13 card.

Watch Malott discuss the situation below.

Malott (10-2-1) has emerged as one of the most promising fighters to come out of Canada in years after earning a UFC contract on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2021. He began his UFC career with three straight wins, all finishes, before facing Neil Magny at UFC 297 this past June. The 32-year-old was ahead on the scorecards through two rounds, but the more experienced Magny outlasted Malott and finished him late in the third round.

It was Malott’s first loss since October 2014.

Former middleweight champion and third-ranked 185-pound contender Robert Whittaker has put together back-to-back wins this year rebounding from a loss to Dricus Du Plessis in July 2023.

Fresh off of his UFC Saudi Arabia first-round knockout win over Ikram Aliskerov, Whittaker would like some time off before returning to the octagon.

“I do know that the hard truth in the UFC is that winning opens doors, so win fights,” Whittaker said during an appearance on From The Stands.  “That’s also, fortunately enough, how I make a living.  That’s how I earn the bread for my family.

“Honestly, I’m just going to take some time to chill.  I took the last fight pretty quickly after [Paulo] Costa.  It’s honestly felt like one really long camp,” Whittaker continued.  “I’m going to take the family away a little bit and just cruise, but I look to smash whoever they put in front of me afterwards.”

Whittaker was scheduled to face Khamzat Chimaev in the UFC Saudi Arabia main event but illness forced Chimaev out of the fight.  After Whittaker’s win, Chimaev tweeted ‘We are not done.”  Whittaker isn’t opposed to rebooking a fight with Chimaev but says it’s really up to the fight promotion.

“I’m a middleweight and I don’t pick my fights.  If that’s a fight the UFC wants and is still interested in making – They want me to headline another card out that way, it’s what I do,” Whittaker said.  “Our paths are sure to cross.  We’re both Top 10 middleweights.  It’s kind of the game.”

Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal are coming back to a UFC screen near you. Sort of.

Fanmio announced Wednesday that the Diaz vs. Masvidal pay-per-view boxing match set for July 6, will also be available for purchase on the UFC’s streaming service UFC Fight Pass. When the bout was first announced, Fanmio was set to be the only distributor with a PPV charge of $ 79.99.

A press release from Fanmio lists the UFC Fight Pass purchase price of $ 49.99, a price that was available to early buyers until April 12. MMA Fighting’s Damon Martin confirmed with Fanmio that this is the PPV price across the board now.

Fight Pass is a subscription streaming service with a cost of $ 9.99 a month or $ 95.99 a year. In addition to broadcasting the occasional UFC Fight Night card and housing an archive’s of the promotion’s events and related programming, Fight Pass also includes weekly offerings of regional and international MMA shows.

Diaz vs. Masvidal takes place July 6 at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. The two previously met in the octagon in the main event of UFC 244 in November 2019. Masvidal defeated Diaz via third-round doctor stoppage after opening up a bloody cut over Diaz’s right eye. The win made Masvidal the UFC’s inaugural “BMF” champion.

The rematch marks Masvidal’s pro boxing debut. Diaz recently competed in boxing for the first time in August 2023, when he lost a unanimous decision to influencer Jake Paul.

Riydah Season London Boxing Press Conference

Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois have their championship match set.

The long-rumored matchup was officially announced Wednesday, with Riyadh Season promoting that bout that is set to headline at Wembley Stadium in London on Sept. 21.

Dubois (21-2, 20 KOs)) enters the bout as the reigning IBF champion after seeing his interim title promoted in the aftermath of Oleksandr Usyk vacating the IBF belt on Tuesday. Usyk, who still holds the WBA, WBC, and WBO belts, recently defeated Tyson Fury to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the four-belt era and is set to rematch Fury on Dec. 21 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

This past June, Dubois defeated Filip Hrgovic via eighth-round TKO to claim an interim title. The win put him in line to challenge Usyk, but with Usyk occupied with the Fury feud, it now falls upon Joshua to be Dubois’ first challenger.

Joshua (28-3, 25 KOs) has seen a resurgence since losing a second time to Usyk in August 2022. He has rattled off four straight wins, most recently scoring a stunning second-round knockout of former UFC heayweight champion Francis Ngannou in Riyadh this past March. Joshua looks to reclaim the IBF title that he’s previously held on two occasions.

The following bouts were also announced for the undercard.

Anthony Cacace vs. Josh Warrington

Joshua Buatsi vs. Willy Hutchinson

Tyler Denny vs. Hamzah Sheeraz

Josh Kelly vs. Liam Smith

Mark Chamberlain vs. Josh Padley

When the UFC 303 Dublin Press Conference was abruptly canceled earlier this month, it was apparent that Conor McGregor’s return fight against Michael Chandler was in jeopardy.  A toe injury forced the former two-division UFC champion out of the UFC 303 main event.

The fight card took on a swift transformation after McGregor’s exit and the Irish superstar received criticism from fighters, commentators and fans.  In an unforeseen twist to the story, a former rival came to McGregor’s defense about not fighting at UFC 303.

“I think it’s a minor thing,” Nate Diaz told MMAJunkie.  “I think they’re making a bigger deal out of it than it is.”

Diaz famously handed McGregor his first UFC loss at UFC 196 back in March 2016 after stepping in on days notice after McGregor’s original opponent, Rafael dos Anjos, was forced out due to a broken foot.  McGregor avenged the loss in the rematch five months later at UFC 202, defeating Diaz via majority decision.

“It’s a good idea,” Diaz said about McGregor backing out due to injury.  “If I was f***ed up I’d like to move the fight back too.  But people f***ing freak out.  I think I wouldn’t want to fight until I’m 100-percent ready to rock too because in the past I’ve done all kinds of sh*t I shouldn’t have done.  I think he learned from experience, and obviously the inexperienced people are out there talking sh*t.

“That’s just speaking from their inexperience.  They’re going to have to deal with the criticism until the fight gets done,” Diaz continued.  “I think it will happen and it will all be good.”

Diaz will enter the boxing ring for the second time as a professional on July 6 against a familiar UFC foe, Jorge Masvidal.  The fight takes place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.  The two first fought for the inaugural, symbolic “Baddest Motherf***er” (BMF) belt at UFC 244 in November 2019.  Masvidal won via doctor stoppage due to a cut.  On July 6, they’ll run it back inside the boxing ring.
