Former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor was expected to make his long-awaited return to the octagon on June 29 against Michael Chandler.  After a press conference in McGregor’s hometown of Dublin, Ireland was abruptly canceled hours before it was scheduled to happen earlier this month, rumors began to swirl that McGregor may be out of the fight.

On Friday, those rumors were confirmed when UFC CEO Dana White officially announced that McGregor had been injured and was out of the UFC 303 main event.  White did not provide details about the injury or its severity.

On Saturday, McGregor released a statement via social media speaking for the first time since he was forced to withdrawal from the event.

“Very tough to be ruled out of my scheduled return bout,” McGregor wrote. “I picked up an injury prior to the press conference that required more time to heal than was available to me. The decision to postpone the fight was not made lightly, but one made in consultation with my doctors, the UFC, and my team. My fans and opponent deserve me at my best for this fight and we will get there!

“Thank you for the messages of support, I am in good spirits and confident I’ll be back!”

The McGregor and Chandler fight had been in the making since they coached The Ultimate Fighter 31 as opposing coaches last year. McGregor has been out of action since breaking his leg in a trilogy bout against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021.  He’ll turn 36 next month.

A Trigon Era!

Harold McQueen was in cruise control for the opening round of his BYB Extreme 27: “Brawl in Duval” main event, which lit up the Prime Osborn Convention Center last Fri. night (June 14, 2024) in Jacksonville, Florida. “Lightning” struck opponent Jon Barnard — twice — with a flurry of canvas-crashing punches, but the “Untameable” BYB veteran (somehow) survived the onslaught.

Midway through the second stanza, the rapid-firing McQueen was running out of gas.

The resilient Barnard took over late in the fight, dropping McQueen to one knee for what proved to be the finishing blow. The stoppage was good enough to earn Barnard “Knockout of the Night,” pushing his Trigon record to 3-0 with three knockouts.

Elsewhere on the card, Yordan Fuentes and Jarome Hatch beat the shit out of one another for 15 minutes straight. “The Cuban Crocodile” was the more accurate striker, treating Hatch’s face like Jason Voorhees treats teenage camp counselors; however, the insanely-durable “Hatchet” battled back with a series of lunging power punches to put Fuentes on his heels and keep the fight competitive.

Hatch went on to lose a five-round split decision — and about a gallon of blood — but his crowd pleaser against Fuentes earned both bareknuckle bruisers “Fight of the Night.”

More BYB Extreme 27 results and highlights below:

Jon Barnard def. Harold McQueen:

Yordan Fuentes def. Jarome Hatch:

Isaiah Washington def. Maurice Morris:

Skylar Thomas def. Shyanna Bintiff:

Brandon Birr def. Brandon Desrosier:

James Bodnar def. Craig Williams:

Lukas Jones def. Chris Gonzalez:

BYB Extreme returns on July 13 for “Bourbon Street Brawl” in New Orleans.

Bia Mesquita rolls with Leticia Ribeiro | Wander Roberto/Spaten Fight Night

Jiu-jitsu legend and IBJJF Hall of Famer Bia Mesquita makes her MMA debut Saturday on the undercard of Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen in Brazil, and the 33-year-old wants a fast track to the big leagues next.

Mesquita, a 10-time jiu-jitsu world champion and ADCC gold medalist, faces fellow MMA debutant Jorgina Ramos in a bantamweight matchup at Spaten Fight Night in Sao Paulo. She told MMA Fighting after an open workout session Tuesday that her goal is for a big victory in her debut to lead to a deal with UFC or any other major MMA promotion.

“I hope so,” Mesquita said, “but at the same time, it gives me butterflies in the stomach wondering if it could be too big of a step. But I think that regardless of what happens after this fight, I’m ready to face all challenges. My career in jiu-jitsu was always centered on dedication and that’s why I managed to get where I got, and I definitely won’t disappoint in the MMA world. Regardless of the challenge, if it’s the UFC or any other promotion, I’ll be ready. I’ll be ready to put on a show all the time, wherever I am. My goal is to be the best every day. To start and end my career undefeated.”

Having trained under BJJ legend Leticia Ribeiro her entire career, Mesquita said Ribeiro and her husband — UFC veteran Fabricio Camoes — never really favored a potential move to MMA for her in the past, but thought she was ready now. Mesquita moved to Florida this past September to train under Marcos “Parrumpinha” da Matta at American Top Team, “and having all of them in my corner Saturday makes me even more confident,” she said.

“I’m ready to show why I’m transitioning to MMA and why jiu-jitsu is so efficient,” Mesquita explained. “I started from scratch in the gym, back to being a white belt, and it was wonderful because there was no responsibility, I was there to absorb the most I could. But when the fight got booked and I really had to enter that little cage to spar specifically for a fight, then we saw I was ready and said it was time. It’s time to shine.”

Mesquita has beaten some of the all-time best in the grappling world, and even topped MMA veterans who dared to cross over into her world in recent years like former UFC champion Miesha Tate and former Invicta FC titleholder Jennifer Maia. She, however, said there’s no pressure to be a representative of her native martial art in MMA.

“I’m happy to be transferring my entire career and everything I’ve built in jiu-jitsu to MMA now,” Mesquita said. “I think that’s the mission, to open doors in the sport, specifically in jiu-jitsu, and show fans how wonderful jiu-jitsu is.”

Former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor has released his first comments since being forced to withdraw from the main event of UFC 303.

The postponement of McGregor’s long-awaited return to the octagon against Michael Chandler was made official by UFC CEO Dana White on Thursday night, with the revelation that McGregor suffered an undisclosed injury ahead of the June 29 bout. White then announced that a light heavyweight championship rematch between Alex Pereira and Jiri Prochazka is the new headliner.

McGregor released an Instagram statement Saturday confirming he did suffer an injury, although no specifics were given.

“Very tough to be ruled out of my scheduled return bout,” McGregor said.

McGregor hasn’t competed since an injury TKO loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021, when he suffered a brutal leg break. Since becoming the UFC’s first-ever simultaneous two-division titleholder with a knockout of Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in November 2016, “The Notorious” has only competed five times — with four being inside the octagon, as well as a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather.

During that stretch, the 35-year-old has earned just one victory, a 40-second knockout of Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 in January 2020, while suffering a pair of TKO losses to Poirier, a submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov, and a stoppage loss to Mayweather in his pro boxing debut.
