On Sunday night, WWE held its first-ever live event at the UFC APEX with NXT Battleground, and fight fans were shocked at the professional wrestling spectacle that happened at a venue usually reserved for MMA, The Ultimate Fighter, or Power Slap.

It only took one look at the sizable crowd in attendance for just about everybody watching to wonder why the UFC doesn’t invite the same kind of live audience for the multitude of fight cards held in the same arena?

“You look holding a wrestling match at the APEX that they did the other night, and I saw a couple of videos and I was shocked as well,” UFC analyst Alan Jouban said on The Fighter vs. The Writer. “I’m somebody that’s at the APEX every weekend. I was like, ‘This is APEX?’ I didn’t even realize it. It looked like one of those NXT production studios they have in Florida.”

When UFC first started holding events at the APEX, it was during the height of the global COVID pandemic in 2020, and the self-contained arena allowed the promotion to control every possible aspect of production. Once the pandemic ended, UFC still saw a financial benefit to the APEX cards, especially with a broadcast deal in place with ESPN dependent on delivering a certain number of events per year.

In recent months, UFC CEO Dana White and executives at parent company TKO Group Holdings have both remarked that the organization wants to put more events out on the road and reduce the total number of cards held at the APEX. Just this past weekend in Louisville, Ky., a UFC event drew a $ 2.5 million gate to set a new record for a Fight Night event (breaking the record set in St. Louis just one month ago).

That being said, UFC APEX shows likely aren’t going away, but Jouban believes what WWE managed to pull off with the production of its NXT event might be the perfect catalyst to force some changes for future UFC cards in the same space.

“Look, the UFC is not one to be done up,” Jouban said. “Our producer Zach Candito, the best in the business, everybody says that. You will never find another producer as good as Zach. Dana White does not like to be done up. He always wants his production to be top notch.

“If NXT comes in with their first show or whatever show this was and they put on a spectacular show, and they also show, ‘Look we can get more bleachers, more seats in here, more screens, make it more lively. Make it that intimate feeling that they kind of have right now but with more people and energy.’ I really, really think it’s going to turn some heads at the UFC. They’re going to say, ‘We just got one-upped. Now we can bring something more.’”

Right now, UFC sells VIP experiences for fans interested in attending cards at the APEX, with the cost typically running in the thousands for a single ticket. Some of the more expensive packages are in the five-figure range.

That pricing structure would likely change if UFC started filling the APEX with a bigger live crowd like the one that witnessed the NXT card. It’s undeniable that the energy and excitement for the pro wrestling show dwarfed what usually unfolds at a typical Fight Night on a Saturday in Las Vegas.

As much as UFC and WWE now exist as part of the same overall company, White still operates his business independently from what’s happening in the pro wrestling world.

Call it ego or call it true competitive nature, but Jouban just doesn’t see White applauding WWE on a job well done without thinking that he needs to up the ante where UFC is concerned.

“[White is] seeing the capabilities that other people are doing,” Jouban said. “A whole new production team so it’s different ideas. Dana is already kind of going outside the box with [Power] Slap. Because if you go to a Slap event, it’s done well. They have like 52 camera angles. It is ridiculous and there’s a lot of people there.

“I think we’re going to see this in the future. I think we’re going to start seeing what they just saw this past weekend with NXT. OK, there’s more capabilities, we can put more butts in the seats and maybe more screens and more lights and everything, and using a little bit of the stuff that they’re doing with slap fighting, and kind of merging them together and making these APEX shows, which are, A) cost effective, and B) they let all the fighters fight more frequently. Everybody wins from it. The only downfall was, ‘We miss the big crowd.’ Now that we know we can put 500, 1,000 more people in there and making it bigger and badder.”

In other words, WWE’s success at the APEX might be exactly what UFC needs to make some necessary changes to those events moving forward.

“I think it’s a great thing that could happen at the APEX,” Jouban said. “I think they just have to keep stepping it up and I think this is going to give them a good push in the right direction.”

Khabib Nurmagomedov is a great coach, but he 'needs some work' on becoming a cornerman after UFC 302

Khabib Nurmagomedov is widely considered to be one of the greatest mixed martial artists in the history of the sport—but his skills as a cornerman could use some work.

‘The Eagle’ returned to Islam Makhachev’s corner at UFC 302, overseeing the Dagestani’s third successful defense of the lightweight world title via a fifth-round submission victory over division fan favorite Dustin Poirier. It marked the first time that Nurmagomedov was in his protege’s corner since he claimed the 155-pound crown against Charles Oliveira in October 2022.

Working the corner with Nurmagomedov was renowned MMA coach and American Kickboxing Academy founder Javier Mendez, who helped coach both ‘The Eagle’ and Makhachev to the top of the lightweight division. Speaking with The Schmo following the events of UFC 302, Mendez revealed that while Nurmagomedov is a great game planner, he needs a bit more fine-tuning when it comes to cornering a fighter.

“Khabib’s actually becoming a great coach and a great cornerman – [but] he needs some work on the cornering,” Mendez said. “He’s great at game planning, he’s fantastic at game planning but we need to work a little bit on the cornering – just a little bit” (h/t Bloody Elbow).

Mendez was able to expand on his comments during a follow-up interview with Helen Yee, revealing that Nurmagomedov’s biggest obstacle is his own excitement in the heat of the moment.

“He needs to master the corner though… We still need to work the corner because he goes a little crazy on there, up and down, slamming on the table – [I told him] ‘Calm down, calm down’. He gets really amped up,” Mendez added. “I mean he loves his fighters so much [as] his brothers that you know, he puts everything into that fight when he goes, I forgot what it was like to have him in the corner; it’s kind of crazy.”

Mendez Offered Khabib Nurmagomedov some advice on how to improve his corner work

Having coached a slew of MMA world champions, including Daniel Cormier, Cain Velasquez, Luke Rockhold, and Usman Nurmagomedov, ‘The Eagle’ would be wise to listen to any advice that Mendez has for him.

“I gave him instructions on ‘Hey, it’s okay to do what you need to do but just sit down, yell as loud as you can to get your fighters’ attention, you don’t have to hit the table, stand up and cause the commission to tell us to sit down,’ Mendez said.

“Scream as loud as you can – he goes ‘Coach, how am I going to reach him’, I go ‘Scream, scream as loud as you can’ but you’ve got to say things within reason because you got to listen the crowd, if the crowd’s screaming [too] then your fighter is going to hear nothing.”

With Makhachev’s win over Poirier, the ‘Dagestani Destroyer’ will likely find himself squaring off with No. 1 ranked contender Arman Tsarukyan. No official announcements have been made, but ‘Ahalkalakets’ believes their long-awaited rematch will go down this October in Abu Dhabi or in November when the UFC heads back to the world’s most famous arena—Madison Square Garden.

UFC Fight Night: Perez v Taira Weigh-in
Tagir Ulanbekov | Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images

Tagir Ulanbekov made the wrong kind of statement on the scale.

Ahead of a card filled with flyweight competitors looking to impress, Ulanbekov was the lone 125-pounder to miss the mark at Friday’s official morning weigh-ins for UFC Vegas 93. Ulanbekov came in at 129.5 pounds, 3.5 pounds over the limit (including the one-pound allowance for non-title fights).

Shortly after the conclusion of weigh-ins, UFC announced that Ulanbekov’s bout with Joshua Van has been cancelled as a result of Ulanbekov’s miss.

Flyweight headliners Alex Perez and Tatsuro Taira — No. 12 and No. 13 respectively in the MMA Fighting Global Rankings — were the first fighters to weigh in and both successfully made weight without issue.

With the exception of Ulanbekov, all fighters competing Saturday at UFC APEX made weight, including bantamweights Douglas Silva de Andrade (136) and Miles Johns (135), who were moved to the penultimate bout of the evening after a late card shakeup. Ikram Aliskerov was originally scheduled to fight Antonio Trocoli in the co-main event, but Aliskerov has been moved to next Saturday’s UFC Saudi Arabia main event to fight Robert Whittaker as a replacement for Khamzat Chimaev.

The Ultimate Fighter Season 31: Team McGregor vs. Team Chandler
Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler | Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images

Michael Chandler knew what he was getting in to with Conor McGregor.

On Thursday night, UFC CEO Dana White announced that Chandler’s highly anticipated matchup with Conor McGregor is off of UFC 303. The welterweight bout was schedueld to headline the June 29 card in Las Vegas, but McGregor has been forced to withdraw due to injury.

Sponsor MegaFit Meals released a statement in collaboration with Chandler addressing the news Friday, acknowledging that booking a fight with McGregor was “the highest risk.”

A post shared by MEGAFIT MEALS (@megafitmeals)

“[McGregor] was never the safe bet as an opponent, he was always the highest risk,” an accompanying Instagram caption reads. “Maybe the highest reward… but the biggest opportunity. There is no right or wrong in business… you only take risk to grow, or remain comfortable where you are. Embrace the uncertainty. Seek the opportunity. Take calculated risk… That’s what [Chandler] does.

“And if it doesn’t go as planned… redirect the course to something even more great. Our respect to the man who represents the fight world better than anyone we’ve ever known. NO FEAR. NO LIMITS. NO EXCUSES. Make hard work your passion – who cares who’s on the other side of the punch.”

The UFC 303 main event was to be McGregor’s comeback fight from a broken leg that he suffered in a loss to Dustin Poirier in July 2021. Chandler and McGregor were assigned to be rival coaches on the most recent season of The Ultimate Fighter with the expectation that they would fight one another following the conclusion of the program, but Chandler still had to wait months for their matchup to become official.

Though a McGregor fight typically brings extra attention and pay to his opponents, so far the wait has proven costly for Chandler. Because of his pursuit of the McGregor fight, Chandler has not fought since November 2022 and he was recently removed from the MMA Fighting Global Rankings due to inactivity.

A rematch between light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira and Jiri Prochazka now serves as the new UFC 303 headliner.

Conor McGregor was expected to make his long-awaited octagon return on July 29 against Michael Chandler in the UFC 303 main event.  When the tickets went on sale, a new live-gate record was established with over $ 20 million in ticket sales.  Unfortunately, McGregor was forced to withdraw from the event due to injury.

Former middleweight champion and commentator Michael Bisping reacted to the news of McGregor being out of the UFC 303 fight with Chandler and questioned whether McGregor will ever fight again.

“I don’t know why I was kind of optimistic that this fight was still going to go ahead,” Bisping said on his YouTube channel.  “I should have know, though.  I was on a movie set last week and I was working with ‘Big’ John McCarthy.  A man that is an absolute authority on mixed marital arts and he told me in no uncertain terms, ‘This fight is not happening.  He’s injured.  He’s hurt himself.  His leg, the leg that he broke, that snapped against Dustin Poirier.  His titanium skin bone has failed.’  That’s what ‘Big’ John said.  I thought he was wrong.  I thought he was mistaken.”

McGregor hasn’t fought since suffering a broken leg in the final seconds of the opening round in his trilogy match against Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021.  McGregor turns 36 next month and it will be well over three years when he eventually steps back inside the octagon.

“The big question is, is that it?  Will McGregor ever fight again,” Bisping questioned.  “He hurt himself this time.  What’s to say he won’t hurt himself next time?  What’s to say that he’ll ever be the same fighter again?  Him competing against Dustin Poirier, when the leg snapped, might just be the last time that Conor McGregor ever steps foot inside an octagon.

“Fighters aren’t the same.  Anderson Silva came back from the leg break.  He wasn’t the same,” continued Bisping.  “Chris Weidman, he wasn’t the same.  Chris Weidman still has problems now.  So, it might be the last time.”

UFC CEO Dana White announced that McGregor was out of the July event via social media video but did not provide any details about McGregor’s injury or its severity.  With McGregor injured, White announced a new UFC 303 main event.  Middleweight champion Alex Pereira takes on former titleholder Jiri Prochazka in a rematch in the new event headliner.

Prochazka Ready For ‘Perfect Storm’ At UFC 303

by Site Admin ~ June 14th, 2024

UFC 295: Prochazka v Pereira
Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images

See what Prochazka had to say after being announced as the replacement headliner for Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler at UFC 303.

Jiri Prochazka sounds dialed in and ready for his short-notice title fight against Alex Pereira at UFC 303.

Prochazka was expecting to face Pereira again sometime later in 2024. But when Conor McGregor withdrew from his big fight on June 29th and the UFC came calling, “The Czech Samurai” didn’t hesitate to jump on the opportunity. Now he’ll face “Poatan” in two weeks, and you can tell he’s pretty excited about it.

Jiri Prochazka shared a hype-inspiring message for his fans on Instagram following the UFC’s announcement of his fight.

“I am going to be #THEPERFECTSTORM,” he wrote alongside a trippy drawing of himself. “No space for mistakes, Just WIN/NOW/HERE”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Jiří “BJP” Procházka (@jirkaprochazka)

Pereira and Prochazka faced off at UFC 295 in a violent affair that ended four minutes into the second round. Prochazka shot in for a takedown, ate several brutal elbows to the side of the head, and fell back to the canvas with “Poatan” on top ready to go for the kill.

Some fans are still upset that the referee interrupted that kill, calling the stoppage early. Now Jiri will have a chance to prove he has more to give against Alex in the rematch.

The Czech fighter certainly believes he can beat Pereira. Since losing in November 2023, “Poatan” has been all Prochazka has talked about. We suspect that’s the fight that was on his mind even as he prepared for Aleksandar Rakic at UFC 300. Despite winning a $ 300,000 bonus, Prochazka went right back into training. And now his dream fight has come together out of nowhere.

You could almost say it’s the perfect storm.
