The UFC 302 post-fight press conference is the last piece of business to take care of after the action is over in the Octagon, and we have the live video above at MMAFighting.com.

UFC officials will announce the winners of the “Fight of the Night” and the “Performance of the Night” bonuses, and winning fighters will meet the media after their fights.

The UFC 302 post-fight press conference takes place about 30 minutes after the main event ends, meaning it will start around 2 a.m. ET.

Following Saturday’s UFC 302 event at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, UFC officials announced the recipients of the performance-based bonuses.

Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev double dipped, earning bonuses for ‘Fight of the Night,’ and a ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus for his fifth-round submission win over Dustin Poirier.

Fight Of The Night: Islam Makhackev vs Dustin Poirier

As we get a little distance from this fight, the magnitude of it will start to sink in a little more. Are we in the midst of the greatest lightweight championship run of all time? Did we just watch the great Dustin Poirier fight for the last time?

It’s too much to contemplate on this beautiful evening in Newark, so we’ll just have to bask in the glow of an outstanding title fight that exemplified—over and over—why these two warriors will own a huge percentage of the UFC’s most memorable moments of this generation.

Performance Of The Night: Islam Makhachev

That’s three straight title defenses and 14 straight wins overall for the great Islam Makhachev, who is now poised to become the most dominant lightweight champion in the history of the sport. Khabib Nurmagomedov beamed proudly from the champ’s corner as he watched his star pupil survive a game Dustin Poirier, and once again prove that Makhachev is a puzzle that can never quite be solved. The champ has been considering a run in the welterweight ranks, and watching him tonight, it’s hard to imagine who could stop him.

Performance Of The Night: Kevin Holland

He called himself the UFC’s “best gatekeeper” in his post-win speech, but Kevin Holland is far more than that. A pure menace across both the welterweight and (like tonight) middleweight divisions, tonight he showed off his largely unsung submission skills, locking Michal Oleksiejczuk into a positively gruesome first round armbar to the sheer delight of the Prudential Center crowd.

Attendance: 117,834 (Sold Out)

Gate: $ 7,255,040 (Highest grossing event in Prudential Center history)

Dustin Poirier gave Islam Makhachev everything he could handle, but it wasn’t enough for “The Diamond” to finish his story in the main event of UFC 302, as the lightweight champion Makhachev earned a fifth-round submission win with an incredible finishing sequence.

Following Saturday night’s UFC pay-per-view event, MMA Fighting’s Mike Heck, Jed Meshew, and Alexander K. Lee react to Makhachev’s late stoppage victory, Poirier’s competitive performance and fighting future, and where Makhachev goes from here. Additionally, the panel discusses Sean Strickland’s win over Paulo Costa in the co-main event, some of the horrendous scorecards from judges throughout the night, referee blunders, the quality of the card as a whole, Kevin Holland’s gnarly submission win, Dana White’s comments about Jon Jones being the best fighter in the world over Makhachev, and more.

Sorry, Islam, you’re not No. 1.

Islam Makhachev defended his Lightweight title for the third time last night (Sat., June 1, 2024) when he strangled Dustin Poirier to sleep in the fifth round with a D’Arce choke from inside Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey (watch highlights).

Leading into his main event title fight, Makhachev was officially ranked No. 1 in UFC’s Men’s Pound-for-Pound rankings. However, according to UFC CEO Dana White, he should not hold that ranking. Heavyweight champion Jon Jones should, and if you don’t think that, you’re NUTS.

“Yeah, I think [Makhachev] is one of the greatest of all time. I think he’s incredible. I don’t think he’s the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world,” White told reporters during the UFC 302 post-fight press conference (watch here). “For anybody to call Islam the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world when Jon Jones is still f—king fighting is nuts and shouldn’t be ranking in the pound-for-pound or doing any of the f—king rankings ever- if that’s what you really think. Jon Jones has never lost a fight ever. He’s fought all the baddest dudes in the world. When you think about what pound-for-pound rankings really mean, he moved up to Heavyweight and destroyed the best guy in the world. As long as Jon Jones is still fighting, active, and in the rankings, yeah, nobody’s pound-for-pound best fighter in the world.”

When asked what it would take to dethrone Jones, White doubled down.

“Islam fought [Alexander] Volkanovski, who’s in a weight class lower than him. Jon Jones beat everybody at Light Heavyweight, then beat the best Heavyweight in the division like it was nothing, at a higher weight class,” White said. “So Jon Jones is absolutely positively the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world. Probably the greatest fighter of all time in any sport. When you think about when you talk about who’s the baddest dude in the world, you put two guys in a room and who walks out. Jon Jones walks out of the fu—ing room every time no question about it.”

Trying to figure out who the pound-for-pound best fight on the planet is a pointless argument because everyone will have a different answer, and there is no way to prove who it truly is.

Jones will put his pound-for-pound ranking on the line later this year against Stipe Miocic, most likely in Nov. at Madison Square Garden.

Unless something shocking happens.
