UFC Fight Night: Fakhretdinov v Zaleski dos Santos

Elizeu Zaleski re-signed with the UFC to return Saturday against Randy Brown on the main card of UFC 302 after a long period of waiting, and wants to make up for lost time.

Zaleski beat Benoit Saint Denis and Abubakar Nurmagomedov in back-to-back fights before completing his UFC contract with a majority draw opposite rising welterweight sensation Rinat Fakhretdinov in November. It took five months for UFC to offer him a new deal, but now he’s matched up against Brown on the Newark pay-per-view.

“I knew the UFC valued me,” Zaleski told MMA Fighting.

“It took some time now, but they always saw me as a good asset, so it came at the right time. I have no time to waste as an athlete, of course, but Cristiano [Marcello] and the entire CM System team were confident they would come with a [sensible] offer for us and we would re-sign and stick with them for more time.”

Zaleski holds a UFC record of 10-3-1, including a 2018 knockout win over future middleweight champion Sean Strickland. He’s happy to be thrown against an action-fighter like Brown, who has only gone the distance seven times in 22 octagon appearances.

“I think it’s a great opportunity to be fighting someone like him in my restart,” Zaleski said. “I think I deserve a fight like this to show what I can do and show my value in the company.”

Back in November 2023, Zaleski took aim at Santiago Ponzinibbio when discussing the completion of his UFC deal, and the Brazilian talent said he’s still open to that fight even though a win over Brown could allow him to aim higher in the rankings. Zaleski wants to stay active going forward, so he hopes to end things quickly at UFC 302.

“Randy Brown is a complete MMA fighter,” Zaleski said. “He’s opportunistic, but I see many paths to victory. It could be a knockout, it could be a submission. A decision will be the last option. The way he fights and gives his all the entire time, and the way I always fight too, this fight has everything to end by submission or knockout.”

Belal Muhammad believes Islam Makhachev could 'Skip over 170' and 'Beat Dricus Du Plessis right Now'

Screw 170, Belal Muhammad thinks Islam Makhachev could jump straight up to middleweight if he wants to add a second strap to his collection.

As Makhachev steps into the Octagon for his third defense of the lightweight world title at UFC 302, Muhammad is preparing to embark on his own journey toward UFC gold. On July 27, ‘Remember The Name’ will head to Manchester for a clash with current welterweight champ Leon Edwards.

Belal Muhammad

Though Makhachev is focused on getting past Poirier on Saturday (June 1), the ‘Dagestani Destroyer’ has openly spoken of his desire to challenge for the welterweight title in a bid to become a two-division champion. Should he dispatch ‘The Diamond’ in The Garden State, that could very well be his next step.

That could leave Belal Muhammad feeling a little uneasy as he prepares to compete for the 170-pound crown. However,’ Remember The Name’ rest easy knowing that even if he’s successful in his first title bid at UFC 304, Makhachev’s path to champ-champ status won’t go through him.

Belal Muhammad

“I would never fight him, 100 percent,” Muhammad told MMA Fighting. “But honestly, he could go up to 185 and beat [Dricus] du Plessis right now. I think he’s that good, really. I think he could go up there and be that two-division champ. Skip over 170 for a little bit, let me beat a couple of these younger guys, and then I’ll go up to 185.”

Belal Muhammad believes makhachev will be dominating for years to come

Unlike his mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, who bailed after just three lightweight title defenses, Islam Mahhachev plans on becoming the most dominant champion in the history of the sport — a task Belal Muhammad truly believes the Dagestani can achieve in due time.

“He has plenty of time,” Muhammad said of Makhachev. “He’s dominating his fights. He’s winning easily. I think he’s going to continue on that path of just being a dominant champion. He’s got plenty of years left. He said something about it recently in an interview, saying, ‘I’m still hungry, I’m still here.’ So he’s got a long time to go.”

The fighters competing on Saturday’s UFC 302 pay-per-view event officially weighed in on Friday in Newark, New Jersey.

The fight card is headlined by a lightweight title bout between champion Islam Makhachev and former interim titleholder Dustin Poirier.  Both men officially weighed in at 155 pounds.

UFC Fight Night: Muhammad v Good

As Belal Muhammad embarks on his own chance to become champion at UFC 304, a big part of getting ready has involved Muhammad working alongside Islam Makhachev and his team as the UFC lightweight champ prepares to face Dustin Poirier on Saturday.

Muhammad and Makhachev have become regular training partners over the past few years. In addition to working with Makhachev, Bellator champion Usman Nurmagomedov, and others on that team, Muhammad has also enjoyed the benefits of training alongside retired UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, who still helps out during training camps despite taking a step back from full-time coaching duties.

Muhammad says working with Makhachev, Nurmagomedov, and the rest of their crew has been invaluable as he prepares to take the UFC title away from Leon Edwards in July.

“I’m getting to work with who I think is the Michael Jordan of MMA. I get to work with Khabib,” Muhammad told MMA Fighting. “Islam right now is the Kobe Bryant, the LeBron James. They’re both the best to ever do it. Just getting that knowledge, getting that feel — you can see I got two black eyes going with these guys. It’s a different level going with these guys, just to get their opinions on stuff.

“Khabib is so smart and he’s so good at breaking down guys, and just getting the knowledge that he gives me — one day with Khabib is like getting 50 days with anybody else, because he’s so smart and he’s so good at everything. The little things he shows you will make a huge difference. It’s priceless to get to work with [those] guys. Every time I think about it, I’m like, [I’m] blessed, because I was always a fan of his, and [now] I get to train with these guys and work out with these guys, and see what they do and see how they push, and they’re both champions.”

While Makhachev’s primary focus right now is defending his lightweight title against Poirier at UFC 302, the 32-year-old Russian has spoken openly about his desire to become a two-division UFC champion before his career is over.

Makhachev was even briefly floated as a potential opponent for Edwards when the historic UFC 300 card still needed a headliner, with a champ versus champ fight seeming like a natural fit.

Muhammad truly believes Makhachev has everything it takes to become a two-division UFC champion, but he knows the path to get there won’t go through him.

“I would never fight him, 100 percent,” Muhammad said. “But honestly, he could go up to 185 and beat [Dricus] du Plessis right now. I think he’s that good, really. I think he could go up there and be that two-division champ.

“Skip over 170 for a little bit, let me beat a couple of these younger guys, and then I’ll go up to 185.”

There’s little doubt in Muhammad’s mind that Makhachev could accomplish pretty much anything he sets his mind to, but he would never sacrifice a friend and training partner for a fight like that.

As far as incorporating more of that team into his own preparation for the fight against Edwards in July, Muhammad plans on cross-training with his own coaches and training partners while also working with Makhachev, Nurmagomedov, and the rest.

In fact, Muhammad admits he would love to have Nurmagomedov in his corner when he attempts to become a UFC champion for the first time.

“That would be priceless,” Muhammad said of Nurmagomedov potentially cornering him for the fight. “That would be amazing. Hopefully.

“We’re going to try to nudge his shoulder a little bit and do a little bit of begging. Hopefully. He’s been in the gym, he’s been working more. I’m hoping he gets the itch to be in a corner more.”

Paulo Costa knows it won’t be easy to earn another UFC title shot.

It’s been almost four years since Costa last challenged for middleweight gold, falling to Israel Adesanya via second-round knockout at UFC 253. He has fought just three time since that September 2020 event, going 1-2 in that stretch, but could keep himself in the thick of the title picture if he beats Sean Strickland in the co-main event of UFC 302 this Saturday in Newark, N.J.

Costa is presumably behind Robert Whittaker in the contender pecking order, having lost to the former champion this past February. However, if he impresses against Strickland, and Whittaker falters against Khamzat Chimaev in June, he sees a path back to a championship opportunity.

“I think [because Strickland] already beat [Israel] Adesanya, if Adesanya beats Dricus [du Plessis], if Sean beats me, he’s going to be next. But let’s see, we never know. I have a beef with Adesanya as well and against Chimaev, everything can happen. Let’s see Saturday.

“I think who delivers better on Saturday is going to step in front, it depends how the fight’s going to be. If I knock him out [with] great style Saturday, and the fight in [Saudi Arabia between Chimaev and Whittaker] is not so good, we can be in front of them. It depends how I’m going to perform.”

Dricus du Plessis currently reigns atop the middleweight division after defeating Strickland via split decision in January. It has been assumed for some time that his first title defense will take place against his rival Adesanya, though that matchup has not yet been made official.

Costa knows his chances of leapfrogging Whittaker are slim, so it will be bad news for him if Whittaker’s upcoming fight goes as expected.

“It’s a hard fight to predict,” Costa said of Whittaker vs. Chimaev. “From what I watched when [former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru] Usman fought Chimaev, I think with proper camp, I don’t know how many rounds, even three or five, Whittaker has some advantage against Chimaev.”

Costa was excited to talk about his own fight camp, crediting additions to his coaching staff for helping him improve and prepare for Strickland.

Though Costa hasn’t scored a knockout victory since 2018, he remains must-see television, having earned two Fight of the Night awards in his past five fights and given Whittaker an early scare at UFC 298. On Saturday, he has 25 minutes to prove that he should be the one to fight for the title next.

“My version against Whittaker was pretty good,” Costa said. “I think we just make some adjustments. Of course, every fight you can upgrade, you can evolve every fight, and we are very hard workers. So all the coaches, everyone, they work so hard to improve me, to advance my level, and I agree with [coach Eric Albarracin]. Each camp, I’m better than before. I’m still in my prime. Only 33 years old, I feel great, my body is responding even better and better. I don’t know until when [this will stop], but right now I can [assure] you guys, every fight I’m going to show better and better.

“For this fight, five rounds, even better, because I have more time, more minutes if the fight goes until the fifth round, so we have a lot of time to show. You guys saw the recent fight against Whittaker, the spinning back heel kick, I don’t think anybody expected that. For this fight, you guys are going to see even more things, from ‘Giga Paulo Costa,’ ‘Giga Chad.’”
