Derrick Lewis is no longer competing at UFC Edmonton.

The heavyweight was forced out of his scheduled fight against Jhonata Diniz with the bout now scrapped from the card set to take place Saturday night at Rogers Place.

Lewis was forced out of the contest due to a non-weight cut related medical issue, per UFC officials.

While Lewis did step to the scale at the official weigh-ins Friday morning, he wasn’t at the ceremonial weigh-ins later on, which raised suspicions about his readiness for the fight. A few hours later, UFC officials confirmed that Lewis was pulled from the event and his fight with Diniz was cancelled.

It’s an unfortunate turn of events for Lewis, who was looking to build on a win over Rodrigo Nascimento back in May as he extended his record for most knockouts in UFC history with 15 overall.

Meanwhile, Diniz misses out on the chance to face an established veteran and former title challenger in Lewis after starting out his UFC career with two straight wins while amassing a perfect 8-0 record overall.

The UFC Edmonton card now moves forward with 13 total bouts. A flyweight bout between Canada’s Jasmine Jasudavicius and Ariane da Silva is expected to take the vacant spot on the main card.

Stipe Miocic exudes confidence as he prepares for his highly anticipated showdown with Jon Jones. Heading into their UFC 309 heavyweight title fight at Madison Square Garden, Miocic feels secure in his abilities and isn’t showing any worry.

Jones is heavily favored to win, but Miocic, a former UFC heavyweight champion, is ready to prove his doubters wrong. Miocic has gone 3-2 in his last five fights, securing back-to-back heavyweight title victories over Daniel Cormier in 2019 and 2020. However, he lost his most recent fight via knockout to Francis Ngannou at UFC 260 in March 2021, which cost him the heavyweight title.

Expressing Confidence

In a recent appearance on BS w/ Jake Paul, Miocic discussed his mindset as the fight approaches. He’s maintained a quiet focus, emphasizing his dedication to his training and his desire to stay mentally prepared.

“I’m excited, honestly,” Miocic said. “It’s finally here. It was supposed to happen last year, but an injury took it away. Now, we’re three weeks out. I’m ready. I’ve been pumped. I keep quiet and stay focused on the task at hand, just worrying about my fight. That’s all I focus on.”

Miocic continued, “Jon Jones does a lot of things well, but I have great coaches and teammates who prepare me for whatever happens. I’m not going to wait to see what he’s going to do; I’m going to do what I want to do.”

MMA Fighting has Polaris 30 results live for the Condit vs. MVP fight card, a live blog of the anticipated main event, and more from Fairfield Halls in London, England.

In the main event, UFC veteran Carlos Condit and UFC welterweight star MVP, otherwise known as Michael “Venom” Page will clash in a middleweight contest. Condit, who retired after a loss at UFC 264 in July 2021, is a former WEC champion with a 32-14 career.

MVP lost via unanimous decision to Ian Machado Garry in his last UFC outing at UFC 303 this past June. He has won three of his past five UFC fights.

MMA Fighting has UFC Edmonton results for the Moreno vs. Albazi fight card, a live blog of the top 2 fights, and more from Rogers Place in Edmonton, Canada, on Saturday.

In the main event, two-time UFC champion Brandon Moreno and Amir Albazi clash in a flyweight contest. Moreno is coming off of consecutive close split-decision losses, while Albazi looks to improve his UFC record to 6-0 as he returns from a lengthy layoff.

The latest edition of the MMA Fighting Global Rankings has Moreno ranked No. 4, two spots ahead of Albazi at No. 6.

In the co-main event, two-time strawweight champion Rose Namajunas continues her surge up the flyweight ranks as she takes on Erin Blanchfield. “Thug Rose” has won two straight fights heading into her matchup with the talented Blanchfield, who is coming off just the second loss of her young career.

Derrick Lewis unexpectedly attacked former UFC champion and current color commentator Daniel Cormier with an explicit rant earlier this week and fight fans didn’t know what to think. Even “DC” seems to be confused by “Black Beast’s” verbal beatdown.

Lewis, who returns to action this weekend at UFC Edmonton against rising heavyweight prospect Jhonata Diniz, is looking to turn a new page in his UFC career. This includes a more professional approach during his post-fight interviews and an overall clean act when it comes to his brand and how he’s viewed by fight fans. “Black Beast” explained these changes earlier this week during UFC Edmonton’s pre-fight media day.

In addition, Lewis absolutely unloaded a rant about Cormier and how the former UFC champion is a “piece of s—t scumbag.” Cormier’s name was brought up during questioning and Lewis simply couldn’t hold his tongue. The reasoning behind the “beef” is truly unknown at this time and Lewis remained vague while explaining it, but it could have something to do with the way “DC” has been calling his fights.

“Probably DC,” said Lewis when asked which loss in his career he’d like to get back. “Because that one still doesn’t sit right with me, man. Do people really like DC like that? C’mon, man. I told DC to his face that he’s a piece of s—t. He’s a piece of s—t scumbag, man. F—k DC.”

Of course, Cormier was going to respond at some point. After all, the two will likely cross paths this weekend as UFC travels back to Canada for UFC Edmonton. Cormier reacted to Lewis’ comments earlier this week and still doesn’t understand exactly what’s going on, but intends to find out over the next few days.

“I haven’t seen him for a while, but I was pretty hard on him about retiring because he had lost a couple of fights and I was kind of telling the truth and he seemed mad at me, but I haven’t seen him,” said Cormier during a recent episode of The Ariel Helwani Show. “I’m going to see him this weekend and I’m going to kind of ask him, ‘Yo, are you mad at me?’”

“It sounds like it may be a little underlying, he might be a little pissed at me because of the way I talked about him,” added Cormier. “I don’t know what fight it was where it he didn’t look great, but then he knocked the last guy out and I was like, ‘I’m glad he’s back.’ So I don’t know. My opinions go with their performances and I think maybe that’s what it is, but in terms of anything else, Derrick and I don’t really have many things that we do together outside of the Popeyes thing and then our fight.

“But we can’t be mad at each other, we already fought. It’s settled.”
