Lerone Murphy didn’t get a finish but he dished out a savage amount of punishment over 25 minutes to beat Edson Barboza in the UFC Vegas 92 main event.

The British born fighter showcased a disciplined but devastating boxing attack that pummeled Barboza from one side of the octagon to the other. There were several moments where it appeared Murphy might get the finish but Barboza kept finding a way to survive despite absorbing an obscene amount of strikes during the five round fight.

When it was over the judges scored the contest 50-45, 50-45 and 49-46 as Murphy remains undefeated with his biggest win to date over a veteran contender like Barboza.

“I come here to die,” Murphy shouted after his win. “I come here for a war. I packed all my stuff in the hotel. I didn’t even know if I was coming home. That’s what I was coming for.

“I’ve had the hardest road out here. I’ve put in the work, continue to climb. I’m not really bothered about the rankings, I’m just trying to get to that title. I just took out a legend, Edson Barboza, who was on a two-fight winning streak. I deserve the recognition now. I’ve been in there with the best of the best. I just showed my worth. I’m going to be champion. Simple.”

The striking strategy from Murphy paid off throughout the fight as he led with a great jab while also getting Barboza to bite on his feints. Barboza managed fired back with some of his signature kicks that thudded off Murphy’s lead leg in the early going.

Murphy stayed patient with his combinations and he started slipping through Barboza’s defense with more regularity. A cut opened on Barboza’s nose and he was struggling to avoid the combinations coming from Murphy.

Just before the opening round ended, Barboza slipped to the floor after trying to land a knee but as Murphy jumped down on top of him, the Brazilian uncorked a nasty up kick. The kick cracked Murphy flush in the face and he was clearly rattled as he went back to his corner.

“It was a clean shot, it was good,” Murphy said about the kick.

On the restart, Murphy started slipping a right hand through Barboza’s defense but he quickly fired back with more of those blistering leg kicks. The damage done to his lead leg forced Murphy to start switching stances and actually look for a takedown to keep Barboza guessing.

After the featherweights worked back to the feet, Murphy unloaded a huge right hand that blasted Barboza and put him on wobbly legs. With Barboza backing up against the cage, Murphy really started teeing off without much risk of reprisal as the 30-fight UFC veteran shifted into survival mode.

Murphy’s confidence continued to grow as he kept forcing Barboza to move backwards and unloaded several stinging combinations. The right hand from Murphy seemingly had a direct line to Barboza’s chin and he was struggling to avoid it.

The offensive onslaught continued with Murphy hammering home a couple of nasty left hands to go along with his rights and it appeared Barboza was living on borrowed time.

While Murphy remained in control, he still had to be cautious whenever Barboza exploded forward, which included a slick spinning back kick in the fourth round. Still, Murphy was the faster and more accurate fighter with Barboza just looking a step behind in nearly every exchange.

Murphy continued dishing out the punishment in spoonfuls, popping Barboza with a variety of punches and then looking for the takedown at opportune moments. There was no doubt Murphy had done more than enough to earn the victory, although credit to Barboza for finding a way to stick around until the final horn.

With a 14-0-1 record, Murphy undoubtedly finds himself in a good position after this latest victory with hopes that the UFC takes notice both financially and when it comes to his future with the promotion.

“Where’s Dana [White]? That’s got to be $ 50g’s!” Murphy shouted. “That’s got to be Fight of the Night. It has to be. Give me anybody in that top 10. I’m ready. Let’s go.

Oleksandr Usyk is the undisputed heavyweight champion after defeating Tyson Fury in a fight for the ages, and the combat sports community watched with awe.

After things were razor close for the first three rounds, Fury started to take over from the fourth through the sixth rounds as he used his massive reach, size, and weight advantage beautifully. Usyk began to steal some momentum, then things really heated up with a huge eighth stanza.

But it was Usyk who nearly ended things in the ninth with a brutal barrage that had Fury on skates, wobbling into the ropes, and led to an official knockdown. From there, the fight continued to deliver an all-time classic, but in the end, Usyk came away with the split decision win to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.

UFC Fight Night: Rodriguez v Carnelossi

Piera Rodriguez had a strong start to her UFC Vegas 92 fight with Ariane Carnelossi, but she’ll go home with a disqualification loss due to a pair of intentional headbutts.

After blasting Carnelossi with strikes on the feet that sent her falling to the canvas, Rodriguez followed up with some ground-and-pound before jumping into her opponent’s guard. Before she could throw another strike, Rodriguez led with her head as she came crashing down into Carnelossi, which earned her a warning from referee Mark Smith.

A second later, Rodriguez brought her head crashing down into Carnelossi again, this time more violently than the first, and Smith immediately paused the action to admonish her for the foul. Carnelossi remained down on the canvas for several moments as medical personnel came into the octagon to check on her.

Replays clearly showed the headbutt from Rodriguez, and Smith ultimately waved off the fight once Carnelossi was deemed unable to continue. Carnelossi walked out the octagon before the final decision was even announced.

Ultimately, Smith opted to disqualify Rodriguez for the intentional fouls, with the official end time coming at 3:16 in the second round. Carnelossi gets the win but her night certainly didn’t end the way she wanted.

“It was going well until she had a blatant foul,” UFC color commentator Paul Felder said of the result. “You can’t do that. You can’t headbutt them. You can use control with your forehead, you can bump that chin and you probably get away with it. You can’t go up and then down.”

The disqualification loss serves as Rodriguez’s second in a row overall after she fell to Gillian Robertson in April 2023. As for Carnelossi, the win puts her back on track following a loss to Loopy Godinez back in May 2022.
