James Llontop will step in and face Mauricio Ruffy at UFC 309 on Nov. 16, MMA Fighting has confirmed following a report by Te La Canté MMA. The pay-per-view show will take place at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Llontop replaces Charlie Campbell, who withdrew from the card six days ago due to undisclosed reasons.
Ruffy (10-1) made waves in the lightweight division by knocking out Jamie Mullarkey in spectacular fashion in his octagon debut back in May, pocketing a performance bonus for his effort at UFC 301. The Brazilian talent joined the UFC after stopping Raimond Magomedaliev at Dana White’s Contender Series.
Llontop (14-4), a fellow DWCS alumni, has yet to win under the UFC banner. “Goku” came in a half pound overweight for his debut, tapping to a rear-naked choke versus Chris Padilla in April, before dropping a split decision to Viacheslav Borshchev four months later.
UFC 309 will feature Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic for the heavyweight crown in the headlining attraction, with Charles Oliveira vs. Michael Chandler serving as the co-main event.

Brandon Moreno may not be a UFC champion anymore, but he’s still getting the star treatment.
This Saturday, Moreno takes on Amir Albazi in the main event of UFC Edmonton, and when he does so, he’ll be wearing brand new custom fight shorts. Moreno’s custom shorts are black and red with green lettering, and show images of Quetzalcoatl, a feathered serpent deity in Aztec culture. Check out images of the shorts below, along with Moreno’s reaction.

“Let’s go! Gentlemen, for those who don’t know, Quetzalcoatl is the Aztec god of light, of wisdom, fertility too. [Laughs]. I have three daughters. We know what that means…
“This is so cool. I carry this in my heart. It’s beautiful, to be honest.”
A two-time flyweight champion, Moreno is currently riding a two-fight losing streak. Most recently he dropped a split decision to Brandon Royval at UFC Mexico City back in January.
Undefeated in his UFC tenure, Albazi is currently No. 6 in the MMA Fighting global flyweight rankings and was the original opponent for Moreno at UFC Mexico City until a neck injury forced him to withdraw from the bout. Albazi has not fought since winning a split decision over Kai Kara-France at UFC Vegas 74 in June of 2023.
UFC Edmonton takes place this Saturday at Rogers Arena, and also features a five-round co-main event matchup between Erin Blanchfield and Rose Namajunas.

Khamzat Chimaev may end up fighting for gold in his next fight after he demolished former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker inside the first round at UFC 308.
That’s exactly what UFC color commentator Joe Rogan wants to see after he witnessed Chimaev sink in a nasty rear-naked choke applied across the chin, which ended up shattering Whittaker’s teeth in one of the grisliest finishes in recent history. Rogan was blown away with Chimaev’s performance and he doesn’t see anything else that makes sense outside of a title shot against reigning champion Dricus du Plessis.
“That guy’s a scary ass motherf*cker,” Rogan said on his Fight Companion podcast for UFC 308. “That grappling is next level. He’s a beast. Once he gets a hold of you it’s so dangerous.
“You give him the title shot. Holy shit. He gets a title shot, I think. Not just [beating Whittaker in the first round], but ran through him. He didn’t get touched. He ran through him and strangled him in the first round. He might be the guy.”
Chimaev has remained one of the most hyped prospects on the entire UFC roster after he first arrived in the promotion and ended up winning three fights inside two months. He was initially a contender in the welterweight division but struggles getting down to the 170-pound limit necessitated his move up to middleweight.
Rogan believes that was the best move for Chimaev and the results showed on Saturday.
“Think about this at [185 pounds]. So this guy was killing himself to get to 170,” Rogan said. “At 185, he’s the f*cking man.”
It’s tough to argue against Rogan’s logic regarding Chimaev’s future, especially coming off that kind of performance against a former champion and perennial contender in Whittaker.
While Sean Strickland might have something to say about that after he was promised the next title shot, Chimaev may have just jumped the line with his performance at UFC 308.
“That was super, super impressive,” Rogan said about Chimaev’s win.
It remains to be seen what the UFC plans to do at middleweight with du Plessis still awaiting word on his next opponent with no date or location announced for his next fight.

If court appearances were treated like sporting events, reigning UFC heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, would have his number retired by Bernalillo County Court in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
“Bones” was back in front of the judge on Tuesday to answer for misdemeanor charges of assault and interference with communications, following an incident with drug testers that took place outside his home last March.
Prosecutors agreed to dismiss the charges on the condition that Jones completes four hours of anger management courses and stays out of legal trouble for the next 90 days, according to MMA Fighting, clearing the way for UFC 309.
“I would like to extend my thanks to the justice system for reaching a prompt resolution in this matter, which affirms my innocence and enables me to maintain my focus on the upcoming fight,” Jones wrote on Twitter. “I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to defend my heavyweight title on November 16th at Madison Square Garden.”
Assuming Jones can keep his nose clean over the next few weeks, he’ll defend his heavyweight title opposite former champion Stipe Miocic atop the UFC 309 pay-per-view (PPV) card on Nov. 16 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
