Jake Paul v Mike Perry - Weigh-in

Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight!

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

Over the weekend, Jake Paul viciously battered Mike Perry en route to a sixth-round knockout victory, improving his professional record to 10-1. The boxer certainly looked sharper than in previous performances, but by far the biggest narrative after the fact was that size difference between the two combatants.

Paul was training to fight a Heavyweight, Mike Tyson. Perry, meanwhile, spent his MMA career fighting at 170 lbs. The two met in the middle at Cruiserweight, or 200 lbs., but it was plenty apparent that Paul was the larger man. “The Problem Child” cut to make the limit, whereas Perry tipped the scales with room to spare at a 196.5 pounds.

Who knows how much Paul rehydrated after weigh-ins? He certainly looked a couple weight classes bigger than “Platinum” on fight night, and his punches sent the durable bare knuckle king flying around the ring. Many, including myself, took issue with the size discrepancy, but Paul claims there was a mere 10 pounds between them.

“People say everything about the weight difference,” Paul explained on his podcast (via SportsKeeda). 40-pound or whatever. I was 210 pounds in the ring [on the night of the fight]. So that’s a 10-pound difference. That’s common in boxing.”

After the win, Paul called out UFC Light Heavyweight champion Alex Pereira. “Poatan” is infamously large, a former Middleweight who somehow makes Heavyweights look small. Paul sees the match up as an opportunity to answer “weight bully” claims, though it remains to be seen if UFC will actually allow its champion to cross into the ring against the YouTube star.

He continued, “Alex Pereira rehydrates to 240 pounds [in his UFC fights]. So I want someone, who, when I f—k them up like I did tonight, there is no excuses. Alex Pereira, 6’4”, 240 pounds, kickboxing world champion, two-division champion in the UFC, what the f—k can they say? You keep writing me off. That’s what you guys have done.”

UFC Fight Night: Buckley v Ruziboev
Photo by Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images

Not many have anything bad to say about Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson … unless you’re Joaquin Buckley (or Colby Covington).

Buckley, 30, has turned a new leaf inside the Octagon in 2024. The former viral sensation is starting to reach the potential seen in his unforgettable spinning heel kick knockout from 2020, leading Buckley to the No. 11 spot in Ultimate Fighting Championship’s (UFC) Welterweight rankings.

When Buckley returns to action he’ll seek his fifth consecutive win. That stretch of success would be the longest of his 25-fight career (19-6) since he started as a 6-0 prospect. When it comes to opponent possibilities, “New Mansa” likes the idea of Thompson, and he has his reasons why.

“I’m not even trolling on this one, but I really feel like ‘Wonderboy’ be putting on a role,” Buckley told Parry Punch. “He ain’t as nice as everybody try to claim him to be. I try to keep my personality the same with everybody. I feel like ‘Wonderboy’ gave me different kind of vibes. He definitely didn’t show me no love when I was out there at International Fight Week. Trying to confuse my words and all of these things to make me look goofy in front of his friends and sh*t. Like, okay, I got you. I let things be what it is.

“I feel like ‘Wonderboy’ is the Ellen DeGeneres of MMA,” he concluded. “Seems like the nice guy on camera, but behind closed doors, that motherf*cker’s an asshole, for sure.”

Despite a rough patch that’s seen him go 1-3 in his last four fights, Thompson (17-7-1) remains a top 10 ranked competitor as the No. 8-ranked UFC Welterweight. He last fought at UFC 296 against Shavkat Rakhmonov, who defeated him via a second round rear-naked choke in December 2023 (watch highlights).

Thompson quickly caught wind of Buckley’s comments and responded with the following.

“Must’ve forgot that time he asked me for technique advice and I happily gave it to him,” Thompson replied on Twitter. “That was like a month ago. Keep talking though [smiley face emoji].”

Sour grapes?

Michael Bisping wants to remind you “there are weight classes in combat sports for a reason.”

I guess “The Count” — a former light heavyweight — forgot he ducked Yoel Romero to book himself a title fight against a puffed-up welterweight back in late 2018. Perhaps losing to Georges St-Pierre by way of submission has since soured the retired ex-champ, or maybe he just hates celebrity boxer Jake Paul.

Understandable, when you consider how many times “El Gallo” has whooped former UFC fighters.

That includes Paul’s sixth-round technical knockout victory over Mike Perry last weekend in Tampa, a fight Bisping predicted would end in favor of “Platinum.”

Oops.

“Jake Paul, I think he’s made a tremendous mistake here,” Bisping said on YouTube ahead of the “Fear No Man” pay-per-view (PPV) event. “[Perry is] a real fighter. He’s gonna get in shape, he’s not afraid to mix it up. He’s gonna go right at Jake Paul. Not the way Nate Diaz did. He’s gonna go forward with close, tight, sharp, powerful hooks. He’s gonna be in shape. The man has got a chin and the fire still burns. Mike Perry’s a brawler, man. Mike Perry’s gonna get in his face. Mike Perry, if this fight actually does go down, will destroy Jake Paul. You heard it here first.”

Perry did go right at Paul and was in shape … and got smoked anyway.

Not surprisingly, a bitter Bisping changed his tune immediately after the fight, now insisting the bout should have never taken place to begin with.

“Coming into this fight, I think myself, I think the whole fight community, everyone was behind Mike Perry, but the reality was he was too small,” Bisping said on his YouTube channel. “There are weight classes in boxing, in combat sports for a reason. It was only until the fight started — when I saw them both with their shirts off and just the gloves and the shoes on and the shorts — that I realized just the discrepancy in the size. Jake Paul was about twice the size of him. The weight difference (was) going to be insane.”

I’m assuming Bisping missed their shirtless face off.

If Paul was “twice the size” of Perry he would stand 11’8” and weight over 400 pounds. That’s not quite as silly as Conor McGregor claiming Nate Diaz was “three times the size” of “Notorious” at both UFC 196 and UFC 202, but it’s up there.

I guess MMA math isn’t just for UFC records anymore.

“Well done to Jake Paul if that’s what you want to see,” Bisping continued. “That was a farce. That was ridiculous. That fight should have never even taken place in the first place because it was a sh*t show. Jake Paul was by far the bigger guy and, as I’ve said, there are weight classes for a reason. Jake Paul grinds my gears. Let’s be honest: He does because of all the sh*t talk, of how great that he thinks he is. Then he cherry picks these opponents that are way smaller and less experienced.”

Bisping, now 45, had a fantastic, hall-of-fame career and was an important part of building the UFC brand in Europe. Why someone with his accolades is continually bothered by the antics of Paul is puzzling, unless “The Count” is hoping to score his own fight against “El Gallo” after missing the boat back in early 2021.

Former UFC middleweight, Darren Till, was supposed to compete on the “Fear No Man” fight card last weekend in Tampa, but withdrew from the “Sunshine State” lineup to focus on some bizarre influencer boxing bout in Dubai.

But “The Gorilla” was able to watch clips of the Jake Paul vs. Mike Perry fight, which “El Gallo” won by sixth-round technical knockout (highlights here). Till claims he was left “speechless” by the not-so-sweet “science” on display.

Even in the absence of old, slow dopes.

“Jake Paul was gassed after the first round,” Till told Submission Radio. “F*ck him. To be honest with you, I don’t even know what Mike was doing myself, like, what he was actually doing in there? He was f*cking stumbling over his feet and sh*t like that. I’m actually quite speechless, to be honest with you. Jake was terrible, and so was Mike. Jake was blown out of his ass after the first round, and Mike just was stumbling over his own two feet — like it looked to me like Mike has never been coached by anyone. He just looked like a total amateur in there, like he really did. I get he’s tough and I get he’s durable, but that just only takes you so far. He should have beat Jake. Maybe not, Jake was 40 pounds heavier than him and juiced out of his nut, but still, he probably should have put up a better fight than he did.”

Conor McGregor, in a scathing critique of the Paul-Perry fight, claimed “El Gallo” was 40 pounds heavier than “Platinum,” a (false) statistic that continues to be parroted by follow-up critics because nobody in combat sports has the ability to think for themselves.

Paul weighed in at 200 pounds and fought at 212 pounds after rehydration.

“Jake Paul will not fight me,” Till continued. “I’m six foot one, I’m 225 pounds and I can box. Like, Jake Paul will not fight me. [He is] so lucky that [he] will not fight me because I would punch holes in Jake Paul. Listen, I respect so much the businessman that him and his brother [have become]. Like, major respect. I respect the fact that he’s actually dedicated his whole life to boxing. I respect a lot of things, but I would seriously injure Jake Paul in a ring. I’d just be too technically tactical for him.”

Till, 31, parted ways with UFC after losing five of his last six fights. His only appearance since getting submitted by Dricus Du Plessis in late 2022 was the thunder-stealing (and unsanctioned) circus in Dubai, which may have been a glimpse into the future of “Gorilla Boxing.”

Here’s how they stack up:

Mike Perry (0-2): 5’10” with 71” reach
Darren Till (0-0): 6’1” with 74” reach
Jake Paul (10-1, 6 KOs): 6’1” with 76” reach

Fair fight?

“I’d love to fight Nate Diaz,” Till said. “I’d love to fight [Jorge] Masvidal. I’d love to fight Tommy Fury. I’d love to fight KSI. I’d love to fight Mike Perry. I would love to fight all of these guys. For some reason, my name just doesn’t get [mentioned] there. Like, I don’t know, maybe I’ll just fight myself now.”

UFC Fight Night: Yusuff v Barboza Weigh-in
Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images

A failed drug test for Irina Alekseeva fell through the cracks for months, allowing her to compete in the UFC after signs of exogenous testosterone were found in her system.

The UFC has released a statement on their website calling out USADA for screwing up the administration of a failed drug test for one of their fighters.

According to the entry on UFC.com authored by Combat Sports Anti-Doping (CSAD), “Russian Ronda” Irina Alekseeva failed a drug test on June 21st, 2023, which was when USADA was still running UFC’s drug testing program. Alekseeva’s urine contained ‘values consistent with the administration of testosterone of exogenous origin.’

But USADA didn’t bother to report this drug test failure to Alekseeva or UFC for months.

“USADA failed to report the results of this sample to her and to UFC until October 31, 2023, more than four (4) months after the sample was collected and AFTER Alekseeva was allowed to compete in a UFC event in Las Vegas, Nevada, on October 14, 2023,” the statement read.

The UFC ended it’s relationship with USADA at the end of 2023 (under somewhat acrimonious circumstances), and now uses CSAD. The new drug testing regime hasn’t been as visible as USADA was, but seem to be administrating things in a fair and competent manner thus far.

“While CSAD was not the independent administrator of the UFC ADP during the above-described time period, CSAD recognizes the importance of promptly reporting results on samples collected in the months and weeks leading up to a UFC event BEFORE the event takes place,” the statement read. “CSAD also recognizes that positive results reported out more than 4-months after a sample is collected, and where the athlete is allowed to compete in a UFC bout in the interim, is unacceptable.”

CSAD contacted Alekseeva once their program took over and conducted a full investigation into all of her testing surrounding the failed drug test. Three tests given after the initial test failure all came back with no signs of exogenous testosterone. But due to the delay between failing the test and being notified of the failure, Alekseeva’s team wasn’t able to investigate a detailed list of supplements that may have caused the strange drug test result.

In the past, USADA would have said too bad, so sad, two year suspension. Given the goofy situation surrounding the test notification, CSAD is giving her 12 months from the day she last competed for UFC, which was October 15, 2023.

2024 Republican National Convention: Day 4

White is such a fan of Trump he was willing to give up a day of his vacation on a $ 3 million yacht rental to travel to speak at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

Dana White has been on vacation in Italy for the past week, but that didn’t stop him from taking a quick break from his break to stump for Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention.

White has stood by Trump over the past few difficult years as court cases continue to pile up for the former US president. No matter what salacious headlines were in the news, Trump was always welcome at UFC events, where he’d get VIP treatment.

That led to White getting his own VIP placement on the RNC speaker list: he introduced Trump on the final night of the conference. During the speech, he shouted out his family for letting him disappear from their vacation. Considering the accommodations he left them with, we’re sure they’ll understand.

White’s Instagram featured a story showing him back in Italy and getting helicoptered to a 377-foot superyacht on the Mediterranean Sea. Not White’s yacht, though. The frugal UFC CEO merely rented the massive vessel for a cool $ 3 million.

That’s the kind of money you can make and spend when you build a business like UFC up from a money pit to a point where you can sell it for $ 4 billion. White made out pretty good on that sale even though he owned just 10% of UFC at the time. Imagine how much money he’ll make when he eventually sells Power Slap, which he says is already worth $ 450 million.

Sylve Reacts To Getting Flatlined In Tampa

by Site Admin ~ July 21st, 2024

DAZN

Sylve suffered a bad knockout loss after dominating almost every minute of his fight. Here’s how he reacted to the sudden change in fortune.

Jake Paul walked away from the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida with a big win over “Platinum” Mike Perry, but one of his Most Valuable Promotions prospects didn’t fare as well.

Paul has been pushing Ashton “H2O” Sylve hard for the last two years, booking the slick 20 year old on MVP undercards for his last five fights. Sylve won the first four, then was on his way to winning the fifth on Saturday against Lucas Bahdi … then things went horribly wrong in the sixth round.

Bahdi was getting picked apart the entire fight with Sylve, but he stayed in there and kept mixing things up. That payed off when he landed a big right that clearly hurt “H2O.” Bahdi didn’t let up and hit Sylve with a combo that put his opponent face first to the canvas in a KO of the Year candidate.

It was a stunning result for Sylva and his team, but the 20 year old took the first loss of his twelve fight career with grace.

“God’s plan,” Sylve wrote on an Instagram Story shortly after the loss. “Everything happens for a reason. Have to take your losses like you take your wins.”

He then shared a number of supportive stories from family and friends.

“Buddy was putting on a boxing clinic,” comedian Minikon said in one. “I’m always impressed with your skills, Ashton.”

During the event’s post-fight press conference, Jake Paul shared his support for Sylve.

“He could just look at what I did and just come back stronger,” he said. “Double down. That’s a lesson for everyone out there: what do you do when you take losses in life? You double down. You go back to the drawing board and you keep going. You only lose when you quit. That’s a Mike Tyson quote.”

Boxing isn’t as forgiving of bad losses as MMA is, so we’ll have to see how Sylve recovers from this loss. If Paul sticks by him and keeps pushing him like he has with other fighters on his roster, he could bounce back. But it’ll be hard to erase the memory of him getting flatlined in Tampa.

Biggest Winners, Loser From ‘Paul vs. Perry’

by Site Admin ~ July 21st, 2024

Jake Paul v Mike Perry

The ‘Fear No Man’ boxing event went down last night (Sat., July 20, 2024) inside Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla., featuring a headlining bout between Jake Paul and former UFC star-turned Bareknuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) poster-boy, Mike Perry. In the co-main event, Amanda Serrano absolutely dominated Stevie Morgan to earn a second round technical knockout (TKO) win, while Lucas Bahdi delivered one of the nastiest knockouts we have seen in a while by sleeping Ashton Sylve (see it again here).

Biggest Winner: Lucas Bahdi

We sincerely hope Ashton Sylve is okay following his brutal knockout loss, but we have to give Bahdi his flowers for delivering one of the nastiest knockouts of the year, stopping the 20-year old with a devastating two-punch combo in the sixth round. Before the crushing finish came, Sylve was in full control. But, once heavy hands start flying, one punch is all it takes. Bahdi improves to 17-0, all while taking “H20’s” undefeated record.

Runner Up: Jake Paul

It wasn’t as easy as “El Gallo” thought, but he eventually secured the stoppage win he predicted over Mike Perry in the sixth round. That is now 10 pro boxing wins for Paul, who will next face Mike Tyson (not Alex Pereira) in November. Love him or hate him, Paul looks to be improving every fight. Now, if we can get him to face actual boxers in the prime (not 58 year old’s) or opponents who are the same size, I can maybe get on board.

Biggest Loser: Stevie Morgan

There are mismatches, and then there was Amanda Serrano vs. Stevie Morgan. That was one of the worst pairings we have seen in a long time. I am NOT taking anything away from Serrano, she did her thing, dominated, and put on a masterclass by absolutely obliterating Morgan. But, if we are being honest, Morgan looked like an amateur against Serrano. Her punches lacked pop, power, form…everything. Once Serrano quickly figured out Morgan was in way over her head, she toyed with her and eventually put her way in round two. During her interview after weigh ins, Morgan looked rattled, and once fight night came it showed. Serrano secures her rematch against Katie Taylor, while Morgan will go back to the drawing board and take on someone not on Serrano’s level in order to gain some confidence back.

Pereira FaceTimes Paul After Getting Called Out

by Site Admin ~ July 21st, 2024

Jake Paul secured his tenth boxing victory last night (Sat., July 20, 2024) inside Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla., stopping “The King of Violence,” Mike Perry, via technical knockout (TKO) in the sixth round (see it again here). Afterward, his confidence was sky high because he issued one of his boldest call-outs to date.

During his post-fight victory speech, “El Gallo” called out current Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight champion and former Middleweight title holder, Alex Pereira, to a boxing match.

“Alex Pereira. I’m the king of this, I’m the king of this. Come over, we can make it happen, I want you Alex Pereira,” he said.

At least he’s not calling out Canelo Alvarez.

Upon catching wind of the callout, Pereira and his manager, Ed Soares, hit up Paul while he was in the ring via FaceTime. “El Gallo” entertaining the call for a bit before he hung up on the UFC Light Heavyweight champion of the world.

Pereira recently hinted at his desire to take part in a boxing match after one of the greatest Heavyweight boxers in the game, Anthony Joshua, expressed his desire to see “Poatan” lace up the gloves in the “sweet science.”

Pereira is one of the best strikers in mixed martial arts (MMA), and all he does is “knock everybody out,” Plus, he’s a former K-1 kickboxing champion, so naturally fight fans would be excited at the possibility of seeing him sleep the man once known as “The Problem Child.”

But, as is the norm, Paul is simply calling out fighters he knows he will never realistically fight, unless Pereira — who is coming off another knockout win over Jiri Prochazka — one days gets out of his UFC contract, which won’t be happening anytime soon.

What is realistic for Paul, however, is a fight against Mike Tyson, who was supposed to face the social media influencer last night before health issues forced him out of the fight. The two are scheduled to settle their business on Nov. 15, 2025 in Dallas, Texas. That is, of course, if Tyson — who just turned 58 — actually makes the walk down the ring.

Highlights! Silva Delivers Massive Uppercut TKO

by Site Admin ~ July 20th, 2024

UFC Fight Night: Durden v Silva
Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images

Bruno Silva delivered a big comeback victory earlier tonight (Sat., July 20, 2024) at UFC Vegas 94 live on ESPN/ESPN+ from inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, stopping ranked flyweight Cody Durden with a massive second-round TKO (punches and elbows).

The odds were close entering this one, but Durden was the one who jumped out in the early going with better offense and a more well-rounded attack. Silva hasn’t competed since a submission finish over Tyson Name back in March 2023 so cage rust started to creep in. Silva seemed slow to initiate and it allowed Durden to lead the way.

Durden was in control early into the second with a nice takedown and top control. However, Silva dug deep to get back to his feet and that’s when he landed a brutal uppercut that sent Durden’s mouthpiece flying into the fence. Durden was badly hurt as Silva rushed in for heavy ground-and-pound. Durden eventually went out as the referee stepped in. He was busted up pretty badly.

Check out the video highlights below:

Silva, who hails from Henry Cejudo’s Fight Ready team, has now won his last four trips to the Octagon. They’ve all been finishes. “Bulldog” should be looking at a potential ranking come next week as he creeps into the top 15, where he’s an interesting matchup for almost anyone.
