It wasn’t always pretty but Roman Dolidze did enough to get a win on short notice over Anthony Smith at UFC 303.

Of course, Dolidze accepted the fight just over a week ago after he replaced Carlos Ulberg, which required him to go up to 205 pounds after competing at middleweight for the majority of his career. While it wasn’t a highlight reel victory, Dolidze consistently connected with the better strikes and even dished out some punishment on the ground with Smith seemingly stuck a step behind at every turn.

In the end, the judges scored the fight 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28 with Dolidze getting the nod by unanimous decision.

“Top 10 in two weight classes!” Dolidze shouted after his win. “I don’t like to blame nothing. It’s fighting, you always need to be prepared. I will compete in both of them and will be champion. I’m ready for both weight classes.”

There were more than a few leg kicks being exchanged with Smith stalking Dolidze around the octagon, looking for an opening to throw a combination. Dolidze continued to circle away while chopping away at Smith’s foundation with kicks.

The exchanges on the feet continued until Dolidze rushed forward and the momentum carried Smith to the ground where he found himself on his back. Dolidze followed up with a barrage of punches, perhaps believing that Smith was hurt worse than he actually was in that moment.

Still, Dolidze maintained position on top as he continued to hammer away at Smith, who was resigned to just covering up and trying not to absorb too much damage. Dolidze was also throwing knees to the legs and even connected with one to the head when Smith made the ill-fated decision to try and get up, which left him in a bad position.

When the fight eventually did get back to the feet, Dolidze cracked Smith with a hard left hand that clipped the one-time title challenger. As the fight moved into the third round, Dolidze actually looked like the fresher fighter with Smith’s movement more labored as the fighters continued to trade strikes.

While the activity slowed from both fighters, Dolidze established a good jab with Smith realizing that time was running short for him to earn a victory. Sadly, Smith just couldn’t mount enough offense to turn the tables and Dolidze cruised to a win after taking the fight on short notice.

With the win, Dolidze obviously said he’s willing to compete in two weight classes but he’s got designs on a return to 185 pounds with hopes that he’ll draw a huge name in his next fight.

“I had one desire because this guy is very good,” Dolidze said. “Khamzat [Chimaev] … I want to see him at middleweight.”

Third-ranked featherweight contender Brian Ortega was supposed to fight 14th-ranked Diego Lopes in the UFC 303 co-main event on Saturday.  After running a fever after weigh-ins, Ortega was declared medically unable to fight hours before he was scheduled to bout.

Dan Ige stepped up on hours notice to step in for Ortega.  Lopes had to weigh-in again and the two will fight at a catchweight of 165 pounds.

Ortega returned in February after 18 months outside of the cage healing from injuries in February.  He earned a ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus for his submission win over Yair Rodriguez.

Lopes will enter the octagon at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas riding a three-fight winning streak.  He had finished his three previous opponents in the first round.  Ige last fought in February, defeating Andre Fili by knockout.

The UFC 303 has been an ever changing fight card.  The event was expected to be headlined by Conor McGregor’s octagon return against Michael Chandler but McGregor was forced out due to a toe injury. Once McGregor fell out of the event, the fight card went through a major transformation and continued to even on fight night.

T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas hosted UFC 303 and a middleweight championship rematch between champion Alex Pereira and former titleholder Jiri Prochazka headlines the fight card.

NO WAY! UFC 303 Co-Headliner Changed Mid-Broadcast

In an unprecedented event, Brian Ortega has been removed from his co-main event clash with Diego Lopes later tonight (Sat., June 29, 2024) at UFC 303 LIVE on ESPN+ PPV from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Featherweight veteran Dan Ige will fill in for a ridiculous co-main event mashup.

MMA journalist, Ariel Helwani, reported the potential change midway through UFC 303’s “Prelims” undercard. About 30 minutes later, UFC play-by-play announcer Jon Anik made the official announcement.

“UFC is trying to book Dan Ige x Diego Lopes tonight, I’m told. It’s not 100% yet.

Ortega is on the verge of having to withdraw. He is sick, sources say.

The plan would be a 165-pound catchweight fight, if it gets over the line.

Ige would have to weigh in tonight.

I honestly have never heard of anything like this before considering he didn’t weigh in yesterday.

Developing.”

Remember, Ortega vs. Lopes was booked just two weeks ago in effort to soften the blow from Conor McGregor’s injury and subsequent exit from UFC 303’s main event. A light heavyweight title fight between champion Alex Pereira and Jiri Prochazka was quickly booked as the new headliner for International Fight Week, but Ortega vs. Lopes was brought together to keep the buzz even higher.

Ortega was coming off a second-round submission finish over Yair Rodriguez back in February, while Lopes has won his last three trips to the Octagon by knockout or submission. The featherweight clash, which turned into a lightweight clash, was expected to produce Fight of the Night action. UFC CEO Dana White even offered an extra Fight of the Night bonus because of Ortega.

It’s a bummer to see Ortega pull out with an illness with just hours to go, but at least Ige was standby to pull off one of the biggest saves in recent memory. Fight fans are loving Lopes right now so to remove him from the card (in addition to Ortega) would have been a true killer. UFC officials pulled it off yet again and crossed off all legal boxes to ensure Ige was able to compete.

Ige’s head coach, Eric Nicksick, posted the following message earlier Saturday night, leading fight fans to believe the fight was a done deal. Kudos to all parties for getting this fight done.

“Remember, we’re the guys you call when you run out of ideas,” wrote Nicksick.

Here is the reaction from Ige once the fight was made official:

UFC officials announced the co-main event change to the fight fans in attendance at UFC 303 and Ige received a pretty good pop. Check it out below:
