UFC 301: Shore v Brito
Photo by Alexandre Loureiro/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images

Joanderson Brito will have to wait to fulfill his wish.

The surging Brazilian featherweight has been forced to withdraw from his requested matchup against Dan Ige after suffering a leg injury in training, sources confirmed to MMA Fighting’s Guilherme Cruz on Friday.

Brito and Ige were scheduled to face off at the UFC Fight Night event on July 20 at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas. Brito called for the matchup after his UFC 301 win over Jack Shore.

Brito is now expected to be sidelined six to eight weeks before being cleared to resume full training. Ige tweeted Friday afternoon looking for a replacement opponent in his stead.

The news is an unfortunate turn for Brito (17-3-1) after winning five of his first six UFC appearances, including five straight. Brito first called to face Ige after an October 2022 win over Lucas Alexander, and has repeatedly called out Ige after every win since.

Ige (18-7) finally granted him that pleasure for July 20, but now it appears MMA Fighting’s No. 15 ranked featherweight in the world will have to look elsewhere for an opponent.

Salahdine Parnasse | KSW

Salahdine Parnasse is staying put in KSW.

Parnasse is currently the KSW lightweight and featherweight champion, and on Friday, the Polish promotion announced their champ-champ is staying in Europe for the foreseeable future, having signed a new multi-fight contract with KSW.

Widely considered to be one of the best talents currently competing outside of the major MMA promotions, many expected Parnasse to make the jump to either UFC or PFL, however, KSW was able to retain the services of their 26-year-old phenom. There are no details on his contract at this time.

The French fighter joined KSW in 2017 and has amassed a 10-2 record in the promotion. He won the KSW featherweight title in 2018, avenging his first career loss, and then won an interim lightweight title in 2022, before eventually being promoted to undisputed champion when Marian Ziolkowski suffered an injury minutes before their planned title fight at KSW 83.

At the end of 2023, Parnasse attempted to become the first three-division champion in MMA history when he challenged Adrian Bartosinski for the welterweight title, but lost the bout via decision. Parnasse rebounded from that loss earlier this year with a first-round knockout of Valeriu Mircea in a lightweight title defense.

Alex Pereira, future three-division UFC champion?

Already a former UFC middleweight champion and the current light heavyweight champ, Pereira has made no secret of his willingness to move up in weight again in an attempt to become the first fighter in UFC history to capture a third divisional title. And if footage released Friday of Pereira sparring MMA Fighting’s No. 9 ranked heavyweight Tai Tuivasa is any indication, “Poatan” may not be too out of his depth among the big boys.

Pereira’s longtime coach, former UFC light heavyweight champion Glover Teixeira, told MMA Fighting in December that he believes Pereira would find success at heavyweight.

“If he were to move up, he would change his diet and training routine outside the camp to gain mass,” Teixeira told MMA Fighting. “‘Poatan’ walks around 233 pounds and I think he can go to 246, but not [over that], you know? I think 242 would be good.”

For now, however, that move likely isn’t in the card.

UFC’s two heavyweight champions are currently busy, with interim champ Tom Aspinall set to rematch Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 and champ Jon Jones expected to face Stipe Miocic in a legends bout likely in November at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Pereira, 36, meanwhile, is expected to defend his UFC light heavyweight title sometime in the second half of the year, most likely in a rematch against ex-champ Jiri Prochazka.

If Pereira is victorious, there’s no doubt the heavyweight conversation is going to pick up steam once again, especially if Jones continues to call for Pereira’s number.

Conor McGregor set to land $ 6 million payout from antitrust lawsuit ahead of UFC 303

UFC superstar Conor McGregor will be getting a hefty payout from the anti-trust lawsuit.

The UFC settled the lawsuit out of court for $ 335 million, but the lawyers who worked on behalf of fighters in this case since 2014 are asking for $ 120 million, which leaves $ 215 million to go to the fighters. Out of the $ 215 million, 75% of it will go to fighters who competed between 2010 to 2017, with the other 25% going to fighters who signed a contract after 2017.

The minimum settlement amount any qualifying fighter will earn is $ 8000, according to reports. But, fighters will get paid more money based on what they made during the class period, and according to John Nash, that means Conor McGregor will likely get another $ 6 million.

“Conor McGregor made $ 27 million during the Le class period from 2010 to 2017,” reporter John Nash said in a special two-part podcast (via MMAMania). “We know that because the trial revealed that. So that $ 27 million would be about 4.85% of the total earnings paid out [by UFC] in compensation during the lead class period. So that means he’d get 4.85% of $ 129 million. So about $ 6 million would be going to him…”

“An easy way [to calculate] is to combine all your income you made during the Le period as a fighter, and take 23 percent of that,” Nash said. “That should be how much your compensation will be.”

Meaning, if a fighter made $ 1 million in the UFC, they would get $ 230,000 as part of the settlement.

‘Great optimism’ that Conor McGregor will fight at UFC 303

Conor McGregor is scheduled to return to the Octagon in the main event of UFC 303 against Michael Chandler on June 29.

However, the Dublin press conference this week was canceled and many thought the fight was off, especially after fans noticed that the UFC took down all of Conor McGregor’s free fights on YouTube.

However, MMA reporter Ariel Helwani said on Wednesday that there is a sense of “positivity” and “optimism” that the fight will indeed happen.

McGregor has not competed since July of 2021 when he broke his leg in the trilogy match against Dustin Poirier.
